Portugal game friendly Brazil - Portugal, Nov. 19, 2008 Time 22h local time (Brasilia), 4pm USA Pacific time

Brazil - Portugal
Friendly, Nov. 19, 2008
Estadio Bezerrão, Brasilia, Brazil
22h local time (Brasilia), 4 PM USA Pacific time

Brasilia time now:

Before Portugal's next qualifier Portugal v. Sweden on March 28, 2009, they'll play against the great BRAZIL in a friendly.

On paper everyone knows Brazil wins. However, in the last friendly, February 7, 2007, at the Emirates stadium, in England, the final score was Brazil 0-2 Portugal. The goals were by Simao and Ricardo Carvalho. It was Brazil's first defeat under Dunga.

Two key differences in this friendly:
1) Portugal's new coach- Carlos Queiroz . Still doesn't have a convincing starting lineup.
2) Brazil will play at home, as opposed to England, and we'll see how the home support affects the team. Brazil drew their last qualifier in Brasilia.

Some Portugal players from that friendly's lineup retired or are injured.

(Video- minute 52 to 54, LAST FRIENDLY- Brazil 0-2 Portugal, February 7, 2007, Emirates stadium, England. Narration in Portuguese)

The lineup Portugal 4-3-3
Ricardo gk. Quim is the preferred goalkeeper under Carlos Queiroz. Ricardo hasn't even been on the last 2 call-up lists for Portugal's 2010 world cup qualifiers.

Miguel- Bosingwa started as right-back and Miguel on the bench.

Carvalho (Meira, 90), - Injured, Bruno Alves played in his place in the last game.
Andrade- Pepe gained the central-defender position since the Euro 2008.

Caneira (Ferreira, 45) - Ferreira played as a left-back in the last qualifier.
Tiago (Joao Moutinho, 68)- Injured.
Petit- Retired

Deco (Viana, 61)- Injured
Ronaldo (Simao, 63) - As seen in the last qualifier Portugal 0-0 Albania, Cristiano Ronaldo is FAR from being in his best shape.

Postiga (Nuno Gomes, 75) - Queiroz insists on putting Hugo Almeida as a forward.
Quaresma - Was a substitute in the last qualifier Portugal 0-0 Albania.

Cristiano Ronaldo was in the starting lineup as captain. Portugal coach Scolari replaced him with Simao Sabrosa in the second half and that's when the Portugal team scored both goals to get a victory.

Video- Ricardo Carvalho's goal filmed by fans in the stands.

82nd minute- Substitute Simao Sabrosa scored the first goal, eight minutes from time from Ricardo Quaresma's right-wing cross.

90th minute- The winning goal scored by Chelsea's Ricardo Carvalho in stoppage time.

LAST FRIENDLY- Brazil 0-2 Portugal, February 7, 2007
Lineups:
Brazil 4-2-3-1
Helton; Maicon (Alves, 64), Lucio, Juan (Luisao, 45), Gilberto; Gilberto Silva, Edmilson · (Tinga, 63); Elano, Kaka, Rafael Sobis (Adriano, 45); Fred (Diego, 68)

Portugal 4-3-3
Ricardo; Miguel, Carvalho (Meira, 90), Andrade, Caneira (Ferreira, 45); Tiago · (Joao Moutinho, 68), Petit, Deco (Viana, 61); Ronaldo (Simao, 63) Postiga (Nuno Gomes, 75), Quaresma

Simao Sabrosa, Nani, Deco post-game reaction Portugal 2-3 Denmark- Video interview in Portuguese with English translation

An embarassing defeat at home was unthinkable. After this defeat Portugal was in 4th place of Group 1 of the 2010 World Cup qualifiers. These 3 players said they can't afford to concede goals in the last minutes at home. I agree with them.

00:00- Simao Sabrosa-
"Having the lead, winning 1-0 then getting a draw. Later, a 2-1 with a few minutes to go. We wanted to score goals and we couldn't. We ended up conceding a goal to bring the game to a draw, then another and lost the game. I think that once we are winning 2-1 at home, we can't afford to concede goals in the last 4 minutes. That's football. We're confident. Without a doubt this result is an obstacle. We have to stay together and think of achieving our objective which is to be in the world cup."

00:36 Nani - "We were disorganized for a little bit in the last minutes, and they took advantage of that very well."

00:42 Deco- "When we're winning, we can't keep attacking when there are 5 minutes to go."

00:55 Hugo Almeida- "They're things that happen in football. Unfortunately we lost. We had the game in our hands. We were superior basically during the whole game. In 2 or 3 times we weren't paying attention, we conceded goals. It can't happen anymore and we are very sad. We need to look ahead."

01:40 Simao Sabrosa- "I think the result is unfair. We had a few goal opportunities and could have scored more. It will be an example so it doesn't happen again."

My favorite part of the interview-Simao is on the defensive. The journalist brings up a good point. Portugal can't score a lot of goals in every game. Case in point: the 2 games after this defeat, Portugal scored 0 against Sweden and Albania.

Journalist: "Do you think it's because the national team lacks strikers?"
Simao- "Strikers, what do you mean by 'lacks strikers'?"

Journalist: "Lots of players who fail to score goals."
Simao- "We have 3 games in the era of Carlos Queiroz, we have 11 goals, do you think it's not much?"

Journalist:"But we failed to score some."
Simao- "I think it's important to score. It's also important not to concede goals. Today we scored but we didn't need to concede the goals so it's everyone's fault."

What do you think of their statements?

'Can't depend on one or two players' Cristiano Ronaldo Video interview in Portuguese with English translation-Oct. 14 2008 before Portugal 0-0 Albania

October 14, 2008- Cristiano Ronaldo- Video interview in Portuguese with English translation. This was the pre-game press conference the day before the 2010 world cup qualifier Portugal 0-0 Albania. Includes Portugal training, stretching footage.

Entrevista com cristiano ronaldo em video em portugues na antevisão do jogo frente à Albânia).

The team can't depend only on one or two players. That is why each one of us gives his best when we play. They have 3 games and 4 points like us. We are one of the best teams in Europe and the world. They [Albania] have 4 points like us that's why it's a team we have to respect but with the ambition of wanting to win.

Like I just said, we are favorites but we need to demonstrate it on the soccer field. I'm certain that the team will give a good response. We have to play and score. We have to show we're favorites and that we're the better team. We're going to try to do that. We're going to try to score a goal first to calm the team down. We know that Albania will play on the attack, it's to be expected.

We need to be patient. Everyone of us needs to be patient, especially the players. The fans too. We need to realize that it will be a game with good football from our part.

01:46 Carlos Queiroz speaks in the press conference.

What do you think of Cristiano Ronaldo's statements? Do you think Portugal is one of the best teams in Europe like he said?

One of the best teams- I think it is but it's time to start winning European trophies to back up that claim.

Patience- I'm running out of patience.

Manuel Fernandes scores only winning goal -video-for Valencia in Valladolid 0-1 Valencia, Oct. 5, 2008. Valencia 1st in La Liga table with 16 points.

Manuel Fernandes, attacking midfielder called up by Carlos Queiroz for the next 2 Portugal games, scored the winning goal for Valencia. Valencia played with their away jersey in black with orange number and name.

Video goal by Valencia's Manuel Fernandes, 52nd minute in Valladolid 0-1 Valencia, Oct. 5, 2008, Jornada 6, Matchday 6. Narration in Spanish.

Valencia has scored 13 goals this season 2008-2009. All were done by Spanish players like Villa, Mata.

This goal by Manuel Fernandes is the first goal scored by a non-Spanish player for Valencia. In the 50th minute, the game was 0-0. If Valencia didn't score, they would have received 1 point and slip down at least 2 positions in the table with 14 points. This win gave Valencia the necessary 3 points to stay on #1 with 16 points.

The last time Manuel Fernandes scored was the memorable goal against Manchester United in April 28, 2007. He scored the second goal in that Manchester United defeat, Everton 2-4 Manchester United. He was on loan to Everton.

I think Carlos Queiroz will leave Manuel Fernandes on the bench in the game against Sweden. Fernandes might be a second half substitution in the game against Albania.

Your thoughts on Valencia staying first in the La Liga table? Manuel Fernandes?

Video Post-game interview of Nuno Gomes after Benfica 2-0 Napoli UEFA Cup game- Oct. 3, 2008

Oct. 3, 2008- Video- Nuno Gomes post-game interview in Portuguese.

I was so happy he scored for Benfica!

English translation:

"I think that we did a good game. We achieved what we wanted. In the first leg, we couldn't score the goal we wanted. We wanted to score a goal in the first minutes. We played well eventhough Napoli scared one or two times. In the second half, we interpreted the game better than them. We continued to pressure them. We scored the first goal. From there things were easier. There was more space so our team could play better."

"I don't want to talk about my future..." said Cristiano Ronaldo in today's press conference with Petit, June 17th

In today's press conference it was the turn of Cristiano Ronaldo and midfielder Petit. Here's 30 minutes of today's press conference with Cristiano Ronaldo and Petit. The parts where he speaks in Portuguese.

I think it's Bad Timing to put Ronaldo in today's press conference. Just when rumors of his future had practically disappeared... He's there. Even though the FPF (Portuguese FA) banned questions about Ronaldo's future, he was still asked about it!

I saw that part in Sky Sports news today. Gary Cottrell asked in Ronaldo in English persistently that for all the Manchester Untied fans watching did he decide, Ronaldo just smiled. The FPF representative told him that that question is not allowed. Cottrel asked Ronaldo again that he won't say ok, but if he had already "decided." Ronaldo just said, "you have to respect him." referring to the FPF representative. I don't blame Cottrell for insisting. That's his job as a reporter.

Why not put Petit and Miguel Veloso, or Simao.

About a new manager:

"I don't prefer a certain name. What I hope is that a good manager would come and that it be possible to continue the journey that Scolari started and that has been good."

"I've already said a few times that I don't want to talk about my future, because I'm concentrated in the Euro chmapinoship, namely the next game against Germany. Scolari already decided, good, but I will only talk about it after the Euro ends."

At the end of the press conference, a reporter asked Ronaldo is he preferred "paella" or "fish and chips" and Ronaldo answered "Cod."

- Do you think Cristiano Ronaldo will score against Germany?
