I hope Manuel Da Costa plays in Lecce- Sampdoria this Saturday, April 11, 2009

I hope Manuel Da Costa plays in Lecce- Sampdoria this Saturday, April 11, 2009. He said he's happy at Sapmdoria because he's playing more than at Fiorentina. Now, when can I see him on TV again? He wasn't even called-up in the last Sampdoria game in April 5, 2009.

Some phoots of the last times he played in the Serie A this season:

It was fun watching this on TV. 4-0 victory over Israel was nice. This stellar performance didn't survive in the play-off/3rd place game against Italy.

Video Highlights of UEFA Under21 tournament in 2007, Israel 0-4 Portugal. There are 2 defenses by Portugal goalkeeper Ribeiro.

Defender Manuel Da Costa not on bench for Torino 1-3 Sampdoria, March 22, 2009

Defender Manuel Da Costa was not on bench for Torino 1-3 Sampdoria, March 22, 2009.

"Samp" team in a good moment- Sampdoria's going through good times. Pazzini scores, earned a call-up to the Italy national team. He then scores one of the goals against Montenegro. It's now 12 points away from the relegation zone.

Da Costa not even a substitute- Da Costa was in the 19-man call-up list for the Torino game. He was one of hte 7 defenders called up: Accardi, Campagnaro, Da Costa, Ferri, Gastaldello, Lucchini, Raggi.

In the lineup for the game, I didn't see his name.

Portugal team alternative central defender- I want him to be called up for the Portugal national team now. So far, Carvalho, Pepe and Bruno Alves are 3 of the 'guaranteed' central defenders in the list. An alternative for Queiroz is FC Porto's Rolando. He played in Portgal 0-0 Sweden.

What other central defender? Besides Fernando Meira? I think Manuel Da Costa. 22 years old, born May 6, 1986. He has to keep playing at Sampdoria to get called-up for sure.

Game Torino 1- 3 Sampdoria March 22, 2009
8' p.t. Pazzini,
24' p.t. Sammarco,
29' p.t. Bianchi;
24' s.t. Cassano.

Torino (4-4-1-1): Sereni; Rivalta, Natali, Pisano, Rubin; Diana (25' s.t. Stellone), Corini, Dzemaili, Zanetti (9' s.t. Barone); Gasbarroni; Bianchi. A disposizione: Calderoni, Colombo, Pratali, Saumel, Vailatti. Allenatore: Walter Novellino.

Sampdoria (3-5-2): Castellazzi; Campagnaro (38' s.t. Raggi), Lucchini, Accardi (44' s.t. Gastaldello); Padalino (15' s.t. Dessena), Sammarco, Palombo, Franceschini, Pieri; Pazzini, Cassano.

Substitutes: Mirante, Ziegler, Ferri, Marilungo.

Photos Manuel Da Costa with Railways Cup trophy 2007

Central defender Manuel Da Costa is 22 years old now. He is definitely eligible to be called up for the Portugal team under Queiroz. Competition is high with the untouchables Carvalho, Bruno Alves and Pepe. Who can compete with them?

However, if one of them is injured... Fortunately Carvalho is recovered. Pepe is fit after uncertainty when a player stepped on his right hand!

Queiroz showed he called Rolando when the central defense options were getting scarce. I strongly believe that if Da Costa does play every week with Sampdoria in the Serie A, he will be called up.

Photos Manuel Da Costa in the 2007 Sub21 UEFA Euro in Holland

This is the last time I saw him play in the 2007 Under21 UEFA Euro. If onoly Antunes hadn't missed the penalty in the penalty shootout against Italy then Portugal could have been in the Beijing Olympics.

Da Costa was one of the best players in this Under21 Portugal team. Him and, now Sp. Braga player, left-back Joao Pereira. Nani was a disappointment and only scored in the last game of the tournament.

Video Manuel Da Costa post-game interview in Italian, after Sampdoria 3-0 Inter March 4, 2009, substitute in the 74th minute

After Sampdoria 3-0 Inter on March 4, 2009, Da Costa gave a post-gamne interview. This was a Coppa Italia game, not a Serie A game. It still was a shocking result. Who would have thought that Inter would lose by 3-0?

Fortunately, Da Costa about played in the second half. He replaced Hugo Campagnaro in the 74th minute.

He talked about the team attitude and how he feels in his new team for the time being [he's on loan from Fiorentina], Sampdoria.

He spoke Italian like a native. Can't wait to hear Quaresma in Italian too.

English translation:
01:18 "I have to be ready for these type of games. They are very iportant for the team and the club. Even if we win by 3-0, we have to be stronger than them to bring strength, convey strength through all the players.

I'm here on loan. I want to do everything for the team, the club, the coach and my teammates. I arrived late in the transfer market. The coach gave me his confidence. He explained the technique/ tactics he'll use. Everything's fine (tutt'aposto)."

I really hope he plays in the next 2 Sampdoria games.

Manuel Da Costa- Jan 2009 on loan from Fiorentina to Sampdoria. 20 minutes Feb 2009- 0 minutes in March 2009. Photos of Da Costa with Sampdoria jersey

Manuel Da Costa moved to Sampdoria in the January 2009 market. I missed the move. I remember him from the 2007 Under-21 championship. Wish I could see him play again with the national team. He's 22 now.

Unlike Antunes, a Portuguese defender at Lecce who hasn't played in the last 4 games, Da Costa has played in 1 game in the second-half as a substitute. His competition is the starting lineup central defender pair: Lucchini and Accardi.

Da Costa stayed on the bench for:
the last Sampdoria game, March 15, 2009, draw SAMPDORIA 2-2 ROMA
SAMPDORIA 2-1 AC Milan, March 1, 2009

He played in SAMPDORIA 1-0 ATALANTA, Feb 22, 2009. He replaced central defender Accardi in the 24th minute of the second-half.

He's one of the 5 defenders in the Sampdoria team.

5 ACCARDI Pietro 12.09.1982
16 CAMPAGNARO Hugo Armando 27.06.1980
77 DA COSTA Manuel 06.05.1986
29 FERRI Michele 29.05.1981
28 GASTALDELLO Daniele 25.06.1983
6 LUCCHINI Stefano 02.10.1980
84 RAGGI Andrea

Here's how he looks like playing with Sampdoria:

Da Costa wears #77. The same number that Ricardo Quaresma has at Inter. Now I need to see "La Giostra Dei Gol" on RaiItaliatv this weekend to see Da Costa play with Sampdoria.
