Quaresma when in the starting 11 with the subs, doesn't shine like in the Switzerland 2-0 Portugal euro 2008 game

Finally. Quaresma starting in a Portugal game in this Euro 2008. In the last 10 minutes that he played in the Czech Republic-Portugal game, he showed Scolari that he deserved a place in the starting lineup.

I think Portugal's #17 performs better, more consistently when the stars are in the team- Deco, Cristiano Ronaldo, Carvalho. Put him with Meireles (even though he's his FC Porto teammate) a non-existent midfield and he just breaks down.

In the 1st half, Portugal only went forward when Nani, Miguel or Quaresma used the flanks to get into the area. In one of Portugal's goal occasions- Quaresma was involved.

17:31- As a winger in the left-flank, made a cross to Helder Postiga's head. Except Postiga headed it over the crossbar.

He did have a few missed goal opportunities.

- How would you rate Quaresma in the game? What was he supposed to do to give a convincing performance and show he DESERVES to be in the Portugal starting lineup?

Nani showed Scolari he deserved to be in the starting lineup- in the Switzerland 2-0 Portugal euro 2008 game- what do you think?

What did you think of Nani's performance in the Switzerland 2-0 Portugal euro 2008 game

Now that both wingers Simao and Cristiano Ronaldo weren't in the starting lineup, it was Nani's turn to shine. Great 1st half. Out of all the 9 substitutes used in the starting 11, he looked the most determined to score and to show Scolari that he deserved a place with the starting 11.

Portugal's #19 -Nani- was decisive in many ways, on free kicks, on headers, assisting Helder Postiga. He had to switch from left to right in the 1st half with Ricardo Quaresma. I think Nani was the most threatening on the left flank.

Too bad he couldn't finish one of the goal opportunities he had.

Not to mention the bad luck of not getting 2 penalties for

fouls committed on him.

1st half: 27:37- free kick on target, saved by the goalkeeper.

How would you rate Nani in the game?

-If Scolari saw Nani as ready to be in the starting 11- just who's place would he take? What winger? Simao, or Quaresma? Or what forward? Helder Postiga or Hugo Almeida?

Here are 2 more photos of Nani at the game:

What did you think of Carvalho's substitute in the central defense, FC Porto's Bruno Alves, in the game? Switzerland 2-0 Portugal.

-- What did you think of Carvalho's substitute in the central defense, FC Porto's Bruno Alves, in the game?

Did he 'de-throne' Pepe as Carvalho's central defense partner?

According to the 1st 2 Portugal games, Pepe has 'earned' his place next to Carvalho in the starting lineup.

TThe question was who can be Carvalho's substitute when he's injured, more time getting to know goalkeeper Ricardo

Scolari rested most of the 'stars' because Portugal already had qualified to the quarter-finals. Including Ricardo Carvalho.

I thought Pepe has earned his place next to Carvalho.

Photos, Video: The pitch in St. Jakob's Stadium replaced- the day after Switzerland 2-0 Portugal.

Portugal lost yesterday in Basel at St. Jakob's stadium. The pitch was in such a terrible condition that UEFA had told the Portugal and Switzerland team that they couldn't train there on June 14th, the day before the game.

It had rained heavily the day before the game.

In the video you can see how they replaced the pitch. I thought it was funny that the UEFA official said that "Portugal had saved some of its power" so the pitch was no excuse for their defeat. Very well said!

Big deal- well, Portugal will play its next euro 2008 match here. Since today Germany won the June 19th- Quarter-Final will be here at St. Jakob's stadium-- Portugal- Germany. Let's hope this new pitch brings Portugal some better luck. Some photos.

There's still the Switzerland flag, Portugal flag as if it was the day of the game.

Scolari criticizes the referee and promises a good Portugal in the Quarter-finals- cover of A Bola, day after Switzerland 2-0 Portugal euro 2008 game

I thought it was interesting that the 2-0 defeat didn't deserve the whole page. Not even a Portugal player on the cover. It's true that right after the match Scolari said to the microphones of Portuguese radio Antena 1 that the referee.... and started criticizing them. However, in the official post-match press conference, when a reporter asked him what he thought of the referees, he responded sarcastically "excellent."

Blame it on the referee, cover of O Jogo after Switzerland 2-0 Portugal euro 2008 game

I was curious to see what the cover of some Portuguese sports paper said. The defeat- 2-0. It just doesn't happen. Talentwise, it had more than the Switzerland team. Given the 2 most talked about transfers were for the 1st time in the starting lineup- Midfielder Miguel Veloso (might leave Sporting Lisboa) and FC Porto winger Ricardo Quaresma (on Jose Mourinho's list of targets for Inter).

But noooo. Blame it on the referee. Ok- but don't give him 100% of the blame.

Is it the referee's fault that Helder Postiga missed 4 shots on target in the 1st half because he headed it over the bar? Only his goal that was incorrectly ruled offside.

"Inexistent penalty over Meira", cover of Record, after Switzerland 2-0 Portugal, euro 2008 game June 15th

The cover of Record, a Portuguese sports paper, is mostly about the referee decisions and the 1st half of Portugal. Hey, don't blame it on the referee entirely. What if the referee rightly gave a red card to Paolo Ferreira? Portugal would then be left with 10 men in the 1st half. Do they even mention that? Switzerland showed much more will to win in the last 15 minutes. Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos was grandiose.

The big picture is more important. Portugal, the "B team" didn't show determination, little possession of the ball, virtually no shots on target against 3 by Switzerland in the last 10 minutes. Where was Quaresma int he 2nd half? Miguel Veloso in the 1st half? The midfield link to the forwards? Too many side passes, not much going forward and fast.

No matter how bad Portugal played, Nani was the only one that deserved to be on the cover. The most decisive player.

Record:

2 shots on the crossbar-- Penalty not called on Nani-- goal by Postiga not counted -- Inexistent penalty over Meira

After Switzerland 2-0 Portugal, Who do you think was able to prove they deserved a place in the starting lineup?

See the game? Highlights?

Except for Pepe, Ricardo and Ferreira- the players in the starting 11 were the substitutes. Each one had to prove to Scolari that they deserved a place in the starting lineup. Now, with a defeat of 2-0, the players, not even "Mr. penalty Ricardo" made their case. I think Nani's the only one. Quaresma what a disappointment. I think he's more decisive when he's in the starting lineup next to Ronaldo, Carvalho... Miguel Veloso definitely is the option after Joao Moutinho. Boy did I miss Deco at the game.
