So what's the Portugal national team up to for the UEFA EURO 2008?

  • Saturday, May 31

Friendly Portugal 2 - 0 Georgia
Today the Portugal team had the friendly Portugal- Georgia. It finished an hour ago. Victory 2 nil. A penalty scored by Simao Sabrosa. Did you see it? I heard it live on the radio online.

Afternoon- free time, no team training
The 23 players are free until tomorrow.
In fact, during the friendly Portugal 2 - 0 Georgia. 3 of the players that Scolari substituted for the 2nd half left the Estadio Do Fontelo during halftime.

Talk about being in a hurry. Among them were Cristiano Ronaldo, Deco and Simao Sabrosa. It's the last evening the team will be in Viseu, Portugal training for the UEFA EURO 2008.

Missed the pictures? See the players training in these posts, click on:

Estadio do Fontelo, Viseu, Portugal

The friendly before the Portugal national team leave tomorrow at 6:30pm to Switzerland for the EURO 2008. 1 week from today, Portugal plays its 1st game at EURO 2008, Portugal- Turkey.

I 'm going to listen to it live on the radio online antena1, www.rtp.pt/antena1/. I like the way Nuno Matos and Pedro Ferreira narrate the game. It's like hearing it in Spanish, so much passion and enthusiam especially when there's a goal. They analyze the game, the players, and don't shy away from critiquing Scolari or Cristiano Ronaldo. Joaquim Rita and Jorge Coroado comment on the fouls and referee. I'm watching it because

  • what goalkeeper-
  • what forward
  • what midfield trio? Deco, Petit and ___?
  • team attitude in the 2nd half.

The Portugal starting lineup:

Ricardo,

Bosingwa, Ricardo Carvalho, Pepe, Paulo Ferreira,

Petit, João Moutinho, Deco,

Cristiano Ronaldo, Simão, Nuno Gomes.

----------------------

1st 13 minutes. They were saying that Portugal does what it wants. The big problem for Portugal is the time it will take to score its first goal.

-----

I predict a 3-1 victory for Portugal.

Goals: 1 Nani, 1 Quaresma, 1 Cristiano Ronaldo.

What's your prediction, final result?

What surprised you from the game?

"The defeat in the Champions League won't affect my performance" said defender Ricardo Carvalho

On Friday May 30, the 2 players in the usual press-conference were Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho and Benfica forward Nuno Gomes. According to the training sessions, it's assumed Carvalho will be starting. It's his central defense partner that is still up in the air.

Asked if the 2007/2008 Champions League final can affect ihs performance in the UEFA EURO 2008: [I don't think so, do you]

"I lost the Champions League. It's a crucial moment that is negative for me. But after a few days of working in my country, I think that that defeat will not affect my performance at all. We are professionals and we need to be prepared for everything."

Transfer talk. About possibly going to Inter with Jose Mounrinho:

"I have 3 or 4 more years in my contract with Chelsea that's why it will be difficult to leave but I think that won't interfere. It's good to be recognized by our work and that motivates me more to do a good European championship [EURO 2008]."

About being 1 of the 5 captains of the Portugal national team:

"If I was nominated it's because the manager feels that I have an aspect that can help the team, and that is very good and gratifying."

More transfer talk. Scolari at Chelsea?

"In this moment we don't have a manager and it's normal that Chelsea be interested in Scolari. I'd be satisfied because I already work with him for a long time and think it would be an added-value for Chelsea."

That tough foul on Cristiano Ronaldo in the Champions League final:

"At that moment I didn't have the notion that I could have gotten Ronaldo. But we were opponents and in the field we only think of helping our team. But after seeing the images, I saw that I was a bit rough."
