Fernando Meira in the press conference during the Euro 2008. Now plays with fellow Portuguese Danny at Zenith in Russia. Meira didn't complete his contract with Galatasaray.
Losing place in the Portugal team- Carlos Queiroz did not call-up Meira for the 21-man list for Sweden and South Africa. The defenders were Bruno Alves (FC Porto), Gonçalo Brandão (Siena/Ita), Pepe (Real Madrid/Esp), Ricardo Carvalho (Chelsea/Ing), Nelson (Bétis/Esp), Bosingwa (Chelsea/Ing) Rolando (FC Porto).
Queiroz opted to call instead these 4 central defenders Rolando (FC Porto) and Ricardo Carvalho, Pepe, and Bruno Alves (FC Porto). For the next game against Albania, Meira will need to be very good at Zenith to replace either Rolando or Bruno Alves. Unless, bad luck strikes again and Carvalho gets injured.

Video Where's Scolari? Portugal national team at hotel, when Scolari couldn't be on the bench in the Azerbajian euro 2008 qualifying game
This is a fun video. Scolari had been disqualified for 3 games after the famous 'punch/ no contact' with the opponent.
After the Azerbajian game (Portugal vs Azerbaijan, October 2007) where Scolari couldn't be on the bench, the reporter went to the team hotel and asked each player "Where is Scolari?"
Video- Each player helping themselves to a catered dinner, wearing the burgundy polo shirts answers 'Não Sei (I don't know)'
00:00- Hugo Almeida, Paolo Ferreira, Simao
00:13- Deco, Nuno Gomes, Cristiano Ronaldo
00:19- Joao Moutinho at the buffet table
00:35- Ricardo Quaresma at the table, sitting next to Miguel Veloso and Hugo Almeida, the reporter asks him in Portuguese "From the soccer field, you didn't see him?" Quaresma answers "I didn't I didn't"
00:39- Ricardo Carvalho at the table with a glass of water, says "he was on the bench."
00:45- goalkeeper Quim
00:50- Nani

01:03- Deco
01:35- Scolari's there to say he saw the game...
02:10- Deco in Portuguese "We started the game well, but what was importnat was that, that we achieved a victory."
02:17- Cristiano Ronaldo in Portuguese "The objective was achieved, to win. We're all happy."
02:26- Quaresma says in Portuguese "Nani wants to speak in English" so the interviewer walks over to Nani and asks in English "how was the game" and Nani answers in English "I think the team played very well. It's impossible to speak now because the team is in dinner, maybe after the dinner I speak with you."
03:14- Scolari again
04:26- Nuno Gomes in Portuguese, "Not being able to play, being injured, is harder because I wanted to be in the soccer field with my teammates/ colleagues."

Fernando Meira next Galatasaray game, Champions League Steaua Bucuresti 1-0 Galatasaray- Galatasaray eliminated
Portugal central defender Fernando Meira signed for Galatasaray this season 2008-2009. He wears the # 5 jersey. It's a yellow red, vertical stripes home jersey.
Portugal national team: Meira was in Carlos Queiroz's call-up list in August 20th's friendly, Portugal 5-0 Faroe Islands. Meira played the last 12 minutes (78' Meira in, Raul Meireles out) . He's the third option for Portugal's central defender. The order looks like Carvalho- Pepe, Carvalho- Bruno Alves. Only if either Pepe or Alves need to be replaced, Meira will come in.
Galatasaray just signed forward Milan Baros. Another big name in the team, former Liverpool, Australian Harry Kewell. On August 26, 2008, they trained at the Bucharest stadium.
Steau Bucharesti 1-0 Galatasaray.

No goalkeeper Ricardo in Portugal's call up list for friendly Portugal v. Faroe Islands, August 20, 2008! Your thoughts on the call up list?
On August 20, 2008 every big team is playing a friendly. I know Portugal's game won't be broadcast on TV yet. In case you want to know the call-up list for Portugal's next game, friendly, Portugal v. Faroe Islands:
See the starting lineups here
Surprises: -- No goalkeeper Ricardo!! Hallelujah. He's been out of shape even before the Euro 2008. Time for the new generation or those in better shape.
-- Goalkeeper Eduardo from Sporting
-- forward Danny, currenly Dynamo Moscow.
-- Cristiano Ronaldo not fit so absense not really a surprise.
-- Antunes!!! My rant on Antunes:
-------------
Defender, usually plays in the left, goes forward and crosses to the forwards in the area. Notably known for the missed penalty int he crucial Portugal 0-0 Italy (3-4) Olympic playoff game that eliminated Portugal from the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
From the Sub-21 team! I've been following him since the Under 21 tournament in Holland. Then got to see him in Under-20 World Cup too. He has had bad luck last season. Rumored in 2007 to go to a big club in the Serie A like Juventus. Turns out he signed with AS Roma and got the jersey #15. So far so good. Many weeks not even in Spaletti's call up list. Played about 4 matches in the end of 2007-2008. The few times he played, he did impress Roma fans. This season he moved to Lecce, another Serie A team. I'll be watching how many times coach Beretta includes him in the call up list.
--------------
Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz DID NOT announce the call up list in a press conference. Instead, he did it through a press release on the Portuguese FA's website. The site of the FPF.pt, Federação Portuguesa de Futebol. On to the list:
Goalkeepers:
Daniel Fernandes (Bochum/ Germany),
Eduardo (Sporting Braga),
Quim (Benfica)
Defenders:
Bruno Alves (FC Porto),
Fernando Meira (Galatasaray/ Turkey),
Jose Bosingwa (Chelsea FC/ England),
Pepe (Real Madrid/ Spain),
Miguel (Valence/ Spain),
Paulo Ferreira (Chelsea FC/ England),
Ricardo Carvalho (Chelsea/ England),
Antunes (Lecce/ Italy)
Midfielders:
Deco (Chelsea / England),
Carlos Martins (Benfica),
Joao Moutinho (Sporting CP),
Manuel Fernandes (Valence/ Spain),
Raul Meireles (FC Porto),
Duda (Malaga/ Spain)
Forwards:
Danny (Dinamo Moscou/RUS),
Hugo Almeida (Werder Breme/ Germany),
Nani (Manchester United/ England),
Nuno Gomes (Benfica),
Simao (Atletico Madrid/ Spain).
- Which player were you glad to see on the call up list?

Defender Fernando Meira moved to Turkey, signed with Galatasaray
30 year-old, Portugal central defender, Fernando Meira moved from Stuttgart to Galatasaray, the Turkish club. Out of curiosit I googled the club's official website, www.galatasaray.org, for more news on Meira. He's on the splash page check it out!
Once on the website, it was all in Turkish. I couldn't find the "English version" button. There was an article that he was presented yesterday, July 22 in the press conference with the Galatasaray jersey. I assume this is when he signed his contract:
According to UEFA.com, Meira signed a 3 year deal with Turkish champions Galatasaray AS after being released by German side VfB Stuttgart.
Meira said: "I believe I have turned a new page with this world-famous club. I am well aware that Galatasaray not only aspire to domestic successes but also want significant achievements in Europe. My target before joining Galatasaray was to sign a long-term contract with a top-level club. Now my aim is to win the league and play for Portugal again in the [2010 FIFA] World Cup."
Monica 08's thoughts:
The good thing is that Galatasaray will play in the Champions League. They'll start their UEFA Champions League campaign in the third qualifying round.
I wonder just how often Fernando Meira will play there. I don't follow the Turkish league a lot. Do you? Now with Aragones and Guiza at Fenerbache, I might try to look at the results every week. Wonder if Meira plays this season in the famous derbies, "Galatasaray - Fenerbache", "Fenerbache- Galatasaray".
Let's see if Meira's able to stop Spanish forward Dani Guiza from scoring with Fenerbache. The other big signing Galatasaray had was Kewell from Liverpool.
Relating it to the Portugal national team
In the
Portugal national team he was 3rd choice for central defender. At least during the Euro 2008, Ricardo Carvalho was the 'untouchable' in the central defense in the starting lineup. The choices then were Pepe, Bruno Alves, and 3rd choice, Fernando Meira. If Meira doesn't play regularly who will Queiroz call?
Meira said in his press conference that he hopes to play in the 2010 world cup. He'll be 32 years old and there's already stiff competition from Pepe and Bruno Alves this year. He'll need to really work to convince Queiroz to put him instead of Pepe or Bruno Alves. There's no way Ricardo Carvalho is taken off the starting lineup when he's fit.

One player from the Portugal national team is without a club. Can you guess who?
Hints: - Was a captain the last 2 seasons in his previous club in Germany.
- Was a substitute in the Euro 2008 games.
- His 30th birthday was on June 5th, during the Euro 2008 training camp in Neuchatel, Switzerland.
I read it on L'Equipe Meira quitte Stuttgart. I said "What?" I thought he'd stay at least another season. It says that he was told he wouldn't be wearing the captain's armband anymore. Here's an attractive picture him in the Euro 2008:
Defender Fernando Meira is leaving Stuttgart. Still not known what club he'll play in for next season 2008-2009. The reason isn't public either. I'll go to his official website to see if he has something there.
July 21st- Stuttgart already signed a replacement- central defender from the Netherlands Khalid Boulahrouz. The 26 year old player is from Chelsea and last season was on loan to FC Sevilla where he played little.

- What club do you think Fernando Meira will join for the 2008-2009 season?
