Portugal call-up list for August 12, 2009 friendly 18-man no goalkeeper Daniel Fernandes, No Nuno Gomes- Next Portugal game

Carlos Queiroz released the Portugal 18 man list for the next friendly. Most coaches with games on August 12, 2009 released their call-up list on Monday like France's Domenech.

On August 12, 2009 Portugal will play a friendly game Liechtenstein - Portugal. The Portugal team will get together on Monday August 10 at 12 noon in Oeiras and leave for Liechtenstein the following day.

No Bochum goalkeeper Daniel Fernandes. Goalkeeper Beto, FC Porto new signing made it to the list.

Goalkeepers: Beto (FC Porto), Eduardo (Sporting Braga), Moreira (Benfica).

No Miguel Veloso! Again! Let's see if Tiago stays the 90 minutes.

No Nuno Gomes. Oh No!

We are going to prepare this week to give a good performance this Saturday against Sweden. We want the 3 points if possible. If not, a draw wouldn't be a bad result. "

Right-backs (lateral-direito) of the Portugal team? Bosingwa, Ferreira, Miguel, Nelson, and ?

Will Paulo Ferreira's position as Portugal right-back still be secure by October 2009? I'm not so sure.

There's Bosingwa, Ferreira, Miguel, Nelson. Carlos Queiroz only called up two of them for Portugal 0-0 Sweden and Portugal v. South Africa. They were Bosingwa and Nelson. Bosingwa got injured in the Sweden game. That leaves Nelson for the Portugal v. South Africa game.

Which of 2 right-backs will Carlos Queiroz call up for Albania - Portugal, June 6, 2009?

If Miguel doesn't make it to the list again, Sp. Braga's João Perreira can.

He's in the Selecção Nacional B today. He's preparing for the next game Portugal v. Romania, April 1, 2009. In today's Selecção Nacional B's press conference João Perreira spoke about wanting to be in the Portugal team.

João Perreira:
About eventually being called- up by Queiroz in the Portugal national team-- "I am completely prepared, but I know that it's hard and complicated to get there. There are plenty of great players like Miguel, Bosingwa, and Nélson. nevertheless, I'm working every day to one day accomplish the objective of arriving to the Portugal national team."

(Estou completamente preparado, mas sei que é difícil e complicado chegar lá. Há muito bons jogadores o Miguel, o Bosingwa, o Nélson… mas vou trabalhar, todos os dias, para conseguir, um dia, alcançar esse objectivo.)

About having Carlos Queiroz on the bench in the Portgal v. Romania on April 1, 2009-- "The job of this Selecção B is to prepare players to eventually get to the Portugal national team. It's important for him to be on the bench and personally observe our game."

(O papel desta Selecção B é preparar eventuais jogadores para a Selecção A e é importante que ele esteja no banco a observar, pessoalmente, o nosso jogo", frisou

About feeling the pressure -- "I don't think so. Any player has to feel motivated no matter who the coach is."
(acho que não, qualquer jogador tem de se sentir motivado em vir à Selecção, independentemente de qual for o treinador)

------
Pereira played in the Portugal sub21 in Holland in 2007. I'm looking forward for him to continue getting experience in the international stage.

01:16 Reporter: The 4 players from the premiership have permission to arrive on Friday. That is, after the final of the Champions League. Today, the first player to the arrived was goalkeeper Ricardo. He arrived 10 minutes to 5pm, even before Scolari!

Scolari arrived at 20 minutes to 6 with Murtosa and went directly to the hotel garage.

Reporter: Ricardo, you're the first to arrive, ready to start working?
02:14 Goalkeeper Ricardo: "I've already been working for a long time. I will continue to do so." (Ja estou a trabalhar ha' muito tempo e vou continuar)

Reporter: You're one of the first players to arrive,
Goalkeeper Ricardo: "Hum, it's only a coincidence, that's all."

Reporter: In what shape are you in?
Goalkeeper Ricardo: "Shape? Well, look, like you guys can see, not perfect."

02:35 Deco: "The truth is that I'll do everything I can to train hard. Unfortunately with the injuries this year, I didn't play a lot. So, I have to prepare myself better."

reporter: So Deco, how are you physically right now, all good?
Deco: "Like I just said, the fact that I havent' played a lot.

02:50 reporter: Is it an advantage for the Portugal national team to have Deco...?
Deco: Without a doubt. On one side, I would have hoped to not have these imjuries because it prevented me from playing consistently at my club.

03:24- reporter: "So Deco, Ricardo arrived before the time limit 7 pm. Then the rest arrived. Miguel and Miguel Veloso arrived together in Miguel's car. They also went directly to the garage.
---------
04:04 Joao Moutinho stopped to speak to the journalists:
"I think we have a good group. We're going to try to strengthen it even more."

Reporter: Behind you there's a car full of supporters of the Portugal team. Do you think they have a right to ask you to win the title?
Joao Moutinho: "Not demand the title but demand that we play our best in every game and that's what we'll do."
--------
04:38 Nuno Gomes: "With the coming of new players, done gradually-- I think that in this moment the majority are completely adapted. Therefore, there's no problem about that.

04:50 Reporter: What do you expect of the Portugal team in the Euro 2008?
Nuno Gomes: "The objectives are big, obviously because we have a big team. First of all, we'll focus on our first objective: to go through the group stage."

reporter: Do you think you'll be in the starting lineup?
Nuno Gomes: "I hope so. I will work for that. That depends on the manager's decision. The coach is sovereign and we need to accept his decisions."

Goalkeeper Ricardo back in the "pre-call up list" of Queiroz for the next 2 Portugal game, Sweden and friendly with South Africa

Goalkeeper Ricardo back in goal in the next Portugal game? Not really knowing how stubborn Carlos Queiroz is. So a few days ago, I commented that if Ricardo does make it back, it would be the headline---- no matter who else is a surprise in the list.

Sure enough, today the list of Portugal's pre-call-up list was announced. See for yourself the headline on Record, Portuguese paper March 9, 2009:
Photobucket

After seeing the 38-man pre-call up list I'd say another surprise was Chelsea 2nd choice goalkeeper Hilario.

38-man list pre-call up list by Carlos Queiroz for the decisive qualification match against Sweden (March 28, 2009) and 3 days later, South Africa in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Chelsea is the club with most called up players, 5. FC Porto e Sporting have 3 called up players each. Benfica, only 2 players.
-------
Chelsea:Deco,
Ricardo Quaresma,
Hilário,
Bosingwa
Ricardo Carvalho

FC Porto: Bruno Alves
Raul Meireles
Rolando
Hélder Postiga,
João Moutinho
Rui Patrício, goalkeeper Sporting)
Simão e Maniche (Atlético de Madrid)

Ruben Amorim
Nuno Gomes

Nelson
Ricardo, R. Betis goalkeeper

Orlando Sá
Eduardo, Sp. Braga goalkeeper

Málaga: Eliseu
Duda

Nani
Cristiano Ronaldo

Manuel Fernandes, Miguel
Edinho (AEK)
Varela (Estrela da Amadora)

José Gonçalves (Nuremberga)
Danny (Zenit)
Fernando Meira (Galatasaray)
Tiago (Juventus)
Beto (Leixões)

Pedro Mendes (Rangers)
Pepe (Real Madrid)
Gonçalo Brandão (Siena)

Hugo Almeida (Werder Bremen)
Daniel Fernandes (Bochum)
André Marques (Vitória de Setúbal)
------

What did you think of the players in the list?

Hilario was one of the 5 goalkeepers in the list. Will he make it to the final 2 in the call-up list?

There was no Quim because he's on the bench at Benfica.

Ricardo is in goal at Betis since late January 2009. Was on the bench in the first half of the season. Started well but looked bad in the last game Mallorca 3-3 Betis.

Eduardo is #1 in goal at Sp. Braga. He's playing in the UEFA Cup, good performances.

Daniel Fernandes, #1 goalkeeper in Bochum. Haven't seen Bochum games.

Rui Patricio returned in goal at Sporting in the last game. He had missed at least 4 games after injuring his pinky finger on his left hand.

Hilario is #2 goalkeeper at Chelsea.

4 Central defenders: Pepe (Real Madrid), Fernando Meira (Galatasaray), Bruno Alves (FC Porto), Ricardo Carvalho (Chelsea)

Who will be the pair in the central defense?

Brazil - Portugal
friendly, Nov. 19, 2008
Estádio Walmir Campelo Bezerra, Brasilia, Brazil

Carlos Queiroz announced the 20-man Portugal squad to play for Brazil on the FPF site. (Os 20 jogadores convocados para o particular entre o Brasil e Portugal)

First of all, who is NOT in the list:
Nuno Gomes, Miguel Veloso and Ricardo Quaresma

Goalkeepers:
Eduardo (Braga);
Quim (Benfica);

Midfielders:

Maniche (Atlético de Madrid);
Simão (Atlético de Madrid);
Deco (Chelsea)
Danny (Dínamo de Moscovo);
Raul Meireles (FC Porto);
Tiago (Juventus);

João Moutinho (Sporting);

Defenders:

Bosingwa, (Chelsea)
Paulo Ferreira (Chelsea)
Bruno Alves (FC Porto);
Fernando Meira (Galatasaray)
Pepe (Real Madrid)
Miguel (Valência).
Rolando

Forwards:

Hugo Almeida (Werder Bremen);
Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United);

------
A few surprises:
Two new players called up for the first time-César Peixoto (Braga) and Rolando,
Tiago's back- Tiago played all 90 minutes with Juventus 4-1 Genoa today. The last time he was called up was in 2007.

I can't believe he left out Nuno Gomes and Ricardo Quaresma. Forward Helder Postiga will have to keep waiting. Hugo Almeida is playing regularly already scored two goals with Werder Bremen in the last month. However Almeida has disappointed in the last 2 Portugal games. He couldn't score in the friendly against Faroe Islands (90 minutes on the field). He also missed goal opportunities in qualifier Portugal - Albania and robbed Nuno Gomes of the starting lineup position. Yet Queiroz insists on Almeida. Where are the other forwards Yannick, Postiga...?

Since it's a friendly, we'll see what 6 changes Queiroz makes to the starting lineup. Carvalho's substitute will be Bruno Alves.

My starting 11 includes:
Quim
Paolo Ferreira - Pepe - Bruno Alves - Bosingwa
Maniche - Deco- Simao - Nani
Hugo Almeida

Paolo Ferreira in 90+3 Chelsea 1 - 0 Roma, Oct. 22, 2008, Carvalho, Deco and Bosingwa in starting lineup

The good thing is that the 3 injured Portuguese players, Ricardo Carvalho, Deco and Bosingwa, are fit again. They were injured infor the last Portugal game on October 15, 2008. Paolo Ferreira was a substitute but had a cameo role entering in the 90+3 minute.

Roma did a good job by conceding only one goal in the second half. After the Middlesbrough 0-5 Chelsea result, I would have preferred 2 goals in this important game with a bigger club, one of the best in the Serie A.

Wigan 0-1 Chelsea 4' Deco free kick, video of goal first half highlights, Photos August 24, 2008

Deco fires Blues top: Chelsea fail to impress in 1-0 win at Wigan-- Skysports headline

Deco, Carvalho and Jose Bosingwa played all 90 minutes.

Paolo Ferreira was not even on the call-up list. The other 2 right backs, Bridge and Belletti were in the call-up list. Brige was a substitute in the second half: 83' Ashley Cole out, Wayne Bridge in. Belletti did not play. I think Belletti might leave Chelsea and move to Benfica.

Jose Bosingwa- I couldn't see the game. Saw the highlights and the video below. Sky Sports rating: 7 "More interested in attack than defending." That's true! He's been like that in the Portugal national team. He's more interested in making crosses into the area than running back and defending. One saw that in the Euro 2008 games. That's one way he differs from fellow Portuguese Paolo Ferreira who doesn't go forward as much.

Meanwhile, Scolari has put Bosingwa int he starting lineup in the first two games. I don't think he'll choose Bosingwa as the first choice right-back. We'll see.

According to the EPL Review show on Fox Soccer channel, Chelsea was not the same from last week's 4-0. If it wasn't for Petr Cech making 3 or 4 saves, Wigan could have scored and equalized the game.

JJB stadium, August 24, 2008- First half highlights from ESPN, Deco's goal, a free kick in the 4th minute.

This 1min59 video covers the first half highlights, in case you didn't see the game. Here's some of what they said about how Chelsea wasn't brilliant and didn't dominate last last week.

"To be fair, it was nearly all Wigan. One man especially- Palacios, Yes, very much so. he's been simply outstanding. There were rumors that Man Unted wanted him last season. I can understand why. He's domianted taht center midfield area. Last week when Postmoju went behim. it was like they almost given up. THer s acomplete contrast wtih Wigan in the first half. I'm glad to see it because they're at home. They've got so show some confidence which is what they done. After going behing after the first 4 minutes. They had two or 3 great shots. Another great save by Cech. All credit to them. That's why I say Chelsea need the second goal."

Will Chelsea beat Tottenham? Next Chelsea game- Carvalho, Ferreira, Deco, Bosingwa

Chelsea's third game of the Premier League season. So far 2 wins and NO goals conceded. Deco scored in his first 2 games. Wigan 1-0 Chelsea scored the winning goal from a marvelous free kick.

Next game is at home against Tottenham. I'm curious to see Mexican Giovanni Dos Santos play. Will he score? Will he give Carvalho a hard time. Will Dos Santos outrun Jose Bosingwa or Ferreira?

It wouldn't be a surprise if Tottenham loses this game. It would be their 3rd consecutive defeat. It's amazing how they beat AS Roma at White Hart lane this pre-season, then in a game that matters, (their first home game in this 2008-2009 season) they lose 2-1 against Sunderland.

Chelsea in the table, still in 1st place:

First game with Scolari in charge. This victory makes Chelsea be on top of the table. ManUnited drew 1-1 against Newcastle.

Bosingwa played the 1st 83 minutes. Ferreira replaced him in the 83rd. Carvalho no surprise played all 90 minutes. Deco also played all 90 minutes and even scored the 4th goal (see the video of the goal here) . Hilario was on the bench.

Jose Bosingwa- right back. There's also Paolo Ferreira. After Chelsea's 1st game of the season, we saw Scolari use Bosingwa in the starting 11. In a month, we might see the order of Chelsea's right back.

No goalkeeper Ricardo in Portugal's call up list for friendly Portugal v. Faroe Islands, August 20, 2008! Your thoughts on the call up list?

On August 20, 2008 every big team is playing a friendly. I know Portugal's game won't be broadcast on TV yet. In case you want to know the call-up list for Portugal's next game, friendly, Portugal v. Faroe Islands:

See the starting lineups here

Surprises: -- No goalkeeper Ricardo!! Hallelujah. He's been out of shape even before the Euro 2008. Time for the new generation or those in better shape.

-- Goalkeeper Eduardo from Sporting

-- forward Danny, currenly Dynamo Moscow.

-- Cristiano Ronaldo not fit so absense not really a surprise.

-- Antunes!!! My rant on Antunes:

-------------

Defender, usually plays in the left, goes forward and crosses to the forwards in the area. Notably known for the missed penalty int he crucial Portugal 0-0 Italy (3-4) Olympic playoff game that eliminated Portugal from the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

From the Sub-21 team! I've been following him since the Under 21 tournament in Holland. Then got to see him in Under-20 World Cup too. He has had bad luck last season. Rumored in 2007 to go to a big club in the Serie A like Juventus. Turns out he signed with AS Roma and got the jersey #15. So far so good. Many weeks not even in Spaletti's call up list. Played about 4 matches in the end of 2007-2008. The few times he played, he did impress Roma fans. This season he moved to Lecce, another Serie A team. I'll be watching how many times coach Beretta includes him in the call up list.

--------------

Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz DID NOT announce the call up list in a press conference. Instead, he did it through a press release on the Portuguese FA's website. The site of the FPF.pt, Federação Portuguesa de Futebol. On to the list:

Bosingwa ruled out for 3 weeks, most likely miss the next 2 Portugal games

Chelsea Press Conference with Jose Bosingwa
July 23, 2008- Jose Bosingwa- Chelsea confirmed on Wednesday that Bosingwa is ruled out for at least the next 3 weeks. He left Asia to recover in England.

For the Portugal national team:
Definitely misses the friendly on August 20,
we'll see how match fit he is for the 2010 World Cup qualifyer against Malta.

Was the 1st choice right-back under Scolari during the Euro 2008. Queiroz might finally make Paolo Ferreira play in his natural position as right-back, instead of left-back. After the Euro 2008 quarter-final, it's time for Queiroz to put Ferreira on the bench, try out another right-back.

Great opportunity to see the right-back alternatives.
The 2nd choice was Miguel who is getting on in years.
Abel from Sporting can be another choice. We'll see who Carlos Queiroz calls.

- Your thoughts on Jose Bosingwa being ruled out for Chelsea and the Portugal national team for the next 3 weeks.
