Video Danny (Zenith) interview in Portuguese at Obidos, March 24, 2009

Danny (Zenith) is one of Carlos Queiroz's players. He was called up after Queiroz became coach. Danny was in the starting lineup in Brazil 6-2, scoring the first goal. He's an attacking midfielder who likes to make runs down the middle and shoot.

In the Portugal 0-0 Sweden game, Danny was in the starting lineup beating out Joao Moutinho. He lacked the finishing skills in his 2 chances in the area. Queiroz finally replaced him in the second half. See photos of Danny in Portugal 0-0 Sweden.

Context: This was 4 days before the qualification match Portugal 0-0 Sweden.

00:13 reporter: This game can be decisive, what's your opinion?
Danny: "Yes, it's until the end that we'll see the results. Of coruse every game is decisive. Sweden is a great team. Like I said, we also are a great team with great players. W're going to the stadium to get a victory."

Photos Danny (Zenith) in Portugal 0-0 Sweden, March 28, 2009

Danny (Zenith) was in the starting lineup in Portugal 0-0 Sweden, March 28, 2009. At times it looked he was playing as a striker, the player in the area to make crosses to. He did miss 2 clear chances, as you can see in the first photo.

Unfortunately he couldn't convert his chances and was replaced in the second half for a striker. The only striker in the call-up list for this game. 65' Danny out, Hugo Almeida in.

Video 21-man list of Portugal squad for next 2 games Sweden (qualification) and South Africa (friendly)- No Nuno Gomes, no goalkeeper Ricardo

The 21-man call-up list of the Portugal squad was announced today on the
Federação Portuguesa de Futebol website. The next 2 Portugal games are:

Portugal v. Sweden, March 28, 2009, Estádio do Dragão, Porto, qualification match
South Africa, Lausanne, Switzerland, friendly, África do Sul

After this weekend's games, Carlos Queiroz, will add one more player to the 21-man list. Two plaeyrs called up for the first time, Nelson a defender from Betis, and goalkeeper Beto from Leixoes. Nelson, why? Betis has conceded many goals in the last month, why him and not goalkeeper Ricardo?

As a fan in the USA, how come they can't play at least one friendly here. Lots of European expats and fans here too!

21-man list:

Goalkeepers:

Daniel Fernandes (Bochum/Ale),
Eduardo (Sporting Braga)
Beto (Leixões).

Defenders:

Bruno Alves (FC Porto),
Gonçalo Brandão (Siena/Ita),
Pepe (Real Madrid/Esp),
Ricardo Carvalho (Chelsea/Ing),
Nelson (Bétis/Esp),
Bosingwa (Chelsea/Ing)
Rolando (FC Porto).

Midfielders:

Deco (Chelsea/Ing),
João Moutinho (Sporting),
Maniche (Atlético Madrid/Esp),
Raúl Meireles (FC Porto),
Duda (Málaga/Esp)
Tiago (Juventus/Ita).

Forwards:

Danny (Zenit/Rus),
Simão (Atlético Madrid/Esp),
Hugo Almeida (Werder Bremen/Ale),
Nani (Manchester United/Ing)
Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United/Ing).

Who surprised you?

No Nuno Gomes he does play a few minutes every week. Orlando Sa from Sp. Braga, I thought he'd make it. No Ricardo Quaresma either.

We also know that those are the reasons that will motivate us and that will inspire us to show great football. We need to win the game agaisnt Sweden."

02:16 Interview to Stefan Schwarz, former Sweden player, in Portuguese:
"I think that all the Swedes and the coach know that Portugal is better technically and individually. However, Sweden has the force of the team, a comapct team and well-organized team.

Portugal team for friendly Feb 11- Portugal v. Finland. No Nuno Gomes, gk Ricardo. 3 new players

The surprise is that 3 players were called up for the first time: Eliseu (Málaga), Gonçalo Brandão (Siena) e Orlando Sá (Sp. Braga). Photo of the 3 players as it appeared on today's [Feb. 5, 2009] Record.pt.

NO NUNO GOMES!!!! Unbelievable.

No surprise- Excluded goalkeeper Ricardo and the first-choice goalkeeper since Queiroz took over, Benfica's Quim. Quim had lost his place in Benfica. Only in the last Benfica game was he going to play in goal for the first time in weeks.

No Miguel Veloso. Been dropped form the Sporting CP squad because he was almost going to transfer to Bolton. Failed transfer so he's staying in Sporting again.

Surprised Tiago was called up! He was on the bench in the last Juventus game.

Some of the "pillars" of the Portugal team are missing, Ricardo Carvalho and Jose Bosingwa. The Portugal team won't be the same starting 11 in the qualifyer game in March. Once again, Queiroz will test the "future" in defense and midfield.

Carlos Queiroz announced the Portugal 20-man call-up list on fpf.pt (Portuguese FA site).

--Portugal team for the Feb. 11 friendly Portugal v. Finland
(convocados para o jogo de carácter particular, diante da Finlândia, marcado para a próxima quarta-feira (11 de Fevereiro), pelas 20h45, no Estádio Algarve.)

World Cup 2010 Qualification TicketsGoalkeepers:
Daniel Fernandes (VFL Bochum 1848)
Eduardo (SC Braga)

Defenders:
Bruno Alves (FC Porto)
Gonçalo Brandão (AC Siena)
Pepe (Real Madrid)
Miguel (Valência CF)
Paulo Ferreira (Chelsea FC)
Rolando (FC Porto)

Midfielders:
Deco (Chelsea FC)
João Moutinho (Sporting CP)
Maniche (Atletico Madrid)
Raúl Meireles (FC Porto)
Duda (Málaga CF)
Tiago (Juventus FC)
Eliseu (Málaga CF)

Forwards:
Danny (FC Zenit)
Hugo Almeida (Werder Bremen)
Nani (Manchester Utd)
Orlando Sá (SC Braga)
Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester Utd)

Who will be right-back? Miguel or Paolo Ferreira? I think Ferreira will "pay" for his embarassing performance in the last portugal game Brazil 6-2 Portugal.

Out of all the 20 players I want Danny to do his very best with the Portugal jersey. He's extraordinary at Zenith, and I'm hoping he gains the confidence of Carlos Queiroz to start.

Danny's Zenith draws at home 0-0 against Juventus- Danny played 90 minutes but couldn't score

Since attacking midfielder Danny arrived at Zenith, he's in good shape. Scored important goals especially the winning goal in the UEFA Supercup against the great Manchester United.

After the Euro 2008, Carlos Queiroz called him up for the first time to play in the Portugal national team. Last Wednesday, Danny scored his FIRST goal with the Portugal jersey in Brazil. He surprised everyone by scoring the first goal in the friendly Brazil 6-2 Portugal.

Today however Danny couldn't score at home. The famous Arshavin (did you see his pink boots?) was replaced in the 70th minute. Danny did play 90 minutes but Zenith is eliminated from the Champions League today. Juventus and Real Madrid went through.

Lineups, Video goals of Brazil 6-2 Portugal, Nov. 19, 2008- What went wrong with the Portugal team? Why did Brazil beat Portugal?

If you didn't have a chance to see the goals yet, here's the video. What went wrong with Portugal? Where was Cristiano Ronaldo. Did I miss Nuno Gomes. It would have been much more comforting to see Nuno Gomes come off the bench in the last minutes than Cesar Peixoto. Peixoto was called-up for the first time ever. What was Queiroz thinking by putting this new player in this difficult situation 5-2?

In the name of sportsmanship, congratulations to Brazil on this incredible victory, Parabens.

Video of goals:

Brazil 6-2 Portugal
Nov. 19, 2008
Estadio Bezerrao, Brasilia, Brazil

First time Brazil beat Portugal since 1989! Portugal had beat Brazil in the last two friendlies.

00:00 4' Danny's goal

00:54 8' Luis Fabiano

02:24 24' Luis Fabiano

56' Maicon

57' Luis Fabiano

62' Simao Sabrosa

65' Elano

90' Adriano

What a party for the home fans of Brazil! I would have grabbed Scolari from the stands and make him finish coaching this game. Can't imagine what Carvalho (injured) and Nuno Gomes (not called-up) felt when they saw their teammates go through this embarassment.

Once again Hugo Almeida fails to score for Portugal. He had scored for Werder Bremen last weekend. I hope this performance makes Queiroz call-up Nuno Gomes. We needed a game-changer an experienced striker to help solve this terrible situation of 5-2.

Starting lineups:

BRAZIL 4-4-2: Júlio César; Maicon, Luisão, Thiago Silva, Kléber; Elano, Gilberto Silva, Kaká, Anderson; Luis Fabiano and Robinho.

PORTUGAL 4-3-3: Quim; Bosingwa, Bruno Alves, Pepe e Paulo Ferreira; Maniche, Tiago e Deco; Danny, Cristiano Ronaldo and Simão.

What went wrong with the Portugal team? Which of the 8 goals did you like?

Portugal team jersey numbers- since Portugal 0-0 Albania, Oct. 15, 2008

The Portugal team hasn't kept the same numbers they used in the Euro 2008. The numbers have changed at least twice in the last 2 months. In Portugal 2-3 Denmark, it was one set of numbers. With Cristiano Ronaldo back but no Deco for the qualifier Portugal 0-0 Albania, the numbers changed again.

The classic numbers that won't change unless they're injured are
7- Cristiano Ronaldo. Nani was # 7 in Portugal 2-3 Denmark because Cristiano Ronaldo was injured.
20- Deco
21- Nuno Gomes
10- Joao Moutinho

Danny's Zenit played at home but we're losing for 80 minutes. Tekke scored the Zenit goal and for the first time Zenit finally has 1 point in the group. Zenit is still last in group H. As reigning UEFA Supercup champions, common sense said Zenit would be in third place not last with only 1 point. The referee and assistants were from Portugal.

Zenit (St. Petersburg) - BATE (Borisov)
Matchday 3, Champions League, Oct. 21, 2008
"Petrovsky" (St. Petersburg)

Zenith has to win this home game. They're already last in Group H with zero points.

Clubs --------P -- W -- D -- L -- GF - GA Points
Real Madrid --2 -- 2 -- 0 -- 0 -- 4 -- 1 -- 6
Juventus ----2 -- 1 -- 1 -- 0 -- 3 -- 2 -- 4
BATE ---------2 -- 0 -- 1 -- 1 -- 2 -- 4 -- 1
Zenit------- 2 -- 0 -- 0 -- 2 -- 1 -- 3 -- 0

On Matchday 1-

Stadio Olimpico, Turin (ITA) - Referee: De Bleeckere (BEL)
Matchday 2-
30/09 Zenit 1 - 2 Real Madrid
Petrovsky, St Petersburg (RUS) - Referee: Busacca (SUI)

I thought Zenith would go through the group stage. Having just won the UEFA Supercup, beating none other than Manchester United. Zenith's Champions League form has left something to desire. With the two favorites in the group, it's logical Juve and Real MAdrid have to pass the group stage. Next season's draw might have a more favorable Champions League group for Danny's Zenith.

Prediction for Zenith - Bate? A victory for Zenit and leave the Champions League at least with 1 point?
