Video "Geracao Scolari" part 1 show. Inside the Portugal team training and hotel during the EURO 2004!! I liked watching the players training and just walking around the hotel. I looked for Paulo Ferreira and Ricardo Carvalho. Carvalho still had long hair. Saw more screentime on Rui Jorge, Figo, Maniche, and Rui Costa. I included some screenshots.

Video 21-man list of Portugal squad for next 2 games Sweden (qualification) and South Africa (friendly)- No Nuno Gomes, no goalkeeper Ricardo

The 21-man call-up list of the Portugal squad was announced today on the
Federação Portuguesa de Futebol website. The next 2 Portugal games are:

Portugal v. Sweden, March 28, 2009, Estádio do Dragão, Porto, qualification match
South Africa, Lausanne, Switzerland, friendly, África do Sul

After this weekend's games, Carlos Queiroz, will add one more player to the 21-man list. Two plaeyrs called up for the first time, Nelson a defender from Betis, and goalkeeper Beto from Leixoes. Nelson, why? Betis has conceded many goals in the last month, why him and not goalkeeper Ricardo?

As a fan in the USA, how come they can't play at least one friendly here. Lots of European expats and fans here too!

21-man list:

Goalkeepers:

Daniel Fernandes (Bochum/Ale),
Eduardo (Sporting Braga)
Beto (Leixões).

Defenders:

Bruno Alves (FC Porto),
Gonçalo Brandão (Siena/Ita),
Pepe (Real Madrid/Esp),
Ricardo Carvalho (Chelsea/Ing),
Nelson (Bétis/Esp),
Bosingwa (Chelsea/Ing)
Rolando (FC Porto).

Midfielders:

Deco (Chelsea/Ing),
João Moutinho (Sporting),
Maniche (Atlético Madrid/Esp),
Raúl Meireles (FC Porto),
Duda (Málaga/Esp)
Tiago (Juventus/Ita).

Forwards:

Danny (Zenit/Rus),
Simão (Atlético Madrid/Esp),
Hugo Almeida (Werder Bremen/Ale),
Nani (Manchester United/Ing)
Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United/Ing).

Who surprised you?

No Nuno Gomes he does play a few minutes every week. Orlando Sa from Sp. Braga, I thought he'd make it. No Ricardo Quaresma either.

We also know that those are the reasons that will motivate us and that will inspire us to show great football. We need to win the game agaisnt Sweden."

02:16 Interview to Stefan Schwarz, former Sweden player, in Portuguese:
"I think that all the Swedes and the coach know that Portugal is better technically and individually. However, Sweden has the force of the team, a comapct team and well-organized team.

Maniche dropped from the call-up list for Atletico 3-2 Villareal, March 15, 2009- Some fans think he's too temperamental

I went to find out about Maniche in Marca. The coach Abel Resino dropped him from the call-up list for 'decision tecnica' technical decision, meaning he's fit but made space for other players.

On the comments in the article in Spanish "Abel deja a Maniche fuera de la convocatoria del Atlético ante el Villarreal" from March 14, 2009, most readers:

--- don't think Maniche needs to stay for the next season and that the club can't renew his contract.
--- Some even applaud Abel for already putting aside Maniche and designing the squad for the next season.

--- think Abel is not fit to be a coach of a big club like Atletico

Photo: RAFA CASAL. MARCA

Some comments from the article:

==Guess what? I thought well about Maniche but... my surprise, I didn't even miss him today against Villareal haha. We could have scored 15 goals. How come it didn't go like that against Porto, we'll never know. ¡AUPA ALETI!)

==Abel leaves the best midfielder of Atleti (or motor) out of the call-up list against Villareal.
==About Maniche I sort of understand it.

== Come on Abel, continue like this! Wanderers, not living a regular life out of Atleti: Seitaridis, Maniche, Pernia, Luis Garcia... don't ever sit in the bench of the Vicente Calderón. (ANIMO ABEL, SIGUE ASI!!! Vagos, maleantes y gente de malvivir fuera del Atleti: SEITARIDIS, MANICHE, PERNIA, LUIS GARCIA... que no se vuelvan a sentarse en el banquillo del Vicente Calderón.)

==Abel [coach] making friends since he's arrived. He already had problems with Maxi, then wil Kun, then Forland, and now with Maniche. Like this we won't go anywhere. It's the players who work in the games. The worst thing that can happen to Atletico is to cause division in the dressing room. Even thought the thing about Maniche, well, it's nothing new, a little of justification can be on Abel's side.

------
Maniche is temperamental and was with the previous coach Aguirre. Among the many things he had said at that time was that he already won everything, even the Champions League so Atletico needed him more than he Atletico. That didn't sit well with the fans and Atletico loaned him out to Inter in the SErie A. Maniche was on the bench and only played in the last month and managed to score 1 goal. He came back to Atletico, made peace with former coach Aguirre and began playing more often.

The new coach who replaced Aguirre in January 2009 doesn't consider Maniche worthy of the starting 11 and had put him as a substitute in 3 games in a row. That includes Porto 0-0 Atletico.

If he doesn't play every week he'll speak to the press about it. Fortunately he didn't speak out when he was on the bench at Inter. I suspect that Maniche didn't like being a sub in the last games and the coach wants to tell him, who's boss.

For the next Portugal game, the midfielder competition is getting crowded. Raul Meireles (FC Porto), Danny (Zenith), Joao Moutinho (Sporting), Tiago (Juventus). Deco is ruled out for the next 2 portugal games because of injury.

Goalkeeper Quim, Maniche, Nani, Nuno Gomes, Ricardo Carvalho post-game reaction to Malta 0-4 Portugal, Sept 6, 2008

This was post-game reaction to Malta 0-4 Portugal, Sept 6, 2008.

Portugal couldn't score in the first half. The coach and players acknowledge that they had difficulties scoring in the first half.

These players gave their post-game reaction:
goalkeeper Quim, Maniche, Nani, Nuno Gomes, Ricardo Carvalho

Carlos Queiroz said in Portuguese in the post-game press conference:
"I have to compliment them for how placed in the field. They gave us difficulties in the beginning. We took a while to adapt to the field. In fact in the first 20 minutes our passes were bad. Therefore the links to the forwards were not good. Then the team insisted, we were able to score the first and second goal. When we scored the second goal, Malta lost motivation and faith so everything was easy for us."

00:40 Maniche in Portuguese: "I think we did a good performance especially in the second half. In the first half, it was little hard. There was also the climate and field. Important thin is the victory.

Reporter: Had you lost all hope from coming back to the call-up list? Glad you're back to the call-up list?
Maniche: "I learned that what one does in the past is not enough."

Reporter: "But did you find out what had happened, why you were dropped?"
Maniche: "I understand. What's important is that I'm back with all my heart."

Maniche was on the bench for this important game for Atletico. He was a substitute in the 73rd minute in FC Porto 0-0 Atletico, March 10, 2009.

Unlike Simão Sabrosa and Paulo Assuncão, Maniche was applauded by the FC Porto fans in the stands when he came on! Maniche was in the FC Porto team that won the Champoins League. Simão I assume still represents Benfica for the FC Porto fans.

I thought I'd put this video of a play with goalkeeper Hilário and Paulo Ferreira from 2003-2004.

Goalkeeper Ricardo back in the "pre-call up list" of Queiroz for the next 2 Portugal game, Sweden and friendly with South Africa

Goalkeeper Ricardo back in goal in the next Portugal game? Not really knowing how stubborn Carlos Queiroz is. So a few days ago, I commented that if Ricardo does make it back, it would be the headline---- no matter who else is a surprise in the list.

Sure enough, today the list of Portugal's pre-call-up list was announced. See for yourself the headline on Record, Portuguese paper March 9, 2009:
Photobucket

After seeing the 38-man pre-call up list I'd say another surprise was Chelsea 2nd choice goalkeeper Hilario.

38-man list pre-call up list by Carlos Queiroz for the decisive qualification match against Sweden (March 28, 2009) and 3 days later, South Africa in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Chelsea is the club with most called up players, 5. FC Porto e Sporting have 3 called up players each. Benfica, only 2 players.
-------
Chelsea:Deco,
Ricardo Quaresma,
Hilário,
Bosingwa
Ricardo Carvalho

FC Porto: Bruno Alves
Raul Meireles
Rolando
Hélder Postiga,
João Moutinho
Rui Patrício, goalkeeper Sporting)
Simão e Maniche (Atlético de Madrid)

Ruben Amorim
Nuno Gomes

Nelson
Ricardo, R. Betis goalkeeper

Orlando Sá
Eduardo, Sp. Braga goalkeeper

Málaga: Eliseu
Duda

Nani
Cristiano Ronaldo

Manuel Fernandes, Miguel
Edinho (AEK)
Varela (Estrela da Amadora)

José Gonçalves (Nuremberga)
Danny (Zenit)
Fernando Meira (Galatasaray)
Tiago (Juventus)
Beto (Leixões)

Pedro Mendes (Rangers)
Pepe (Real Madrid)
Gonçalo Brandão (Siena)

Hugo Almeida (Werder Bremen)
Daniel Fernandes (Bochum)
André Marques (Vitória de Setúbal)
------

What did you think of the players in the list?

Hilario was one of the 5 goalkeepers in the list. Will he make it to the final 2 in the call-up list?

There was no Quim because he's on the bench at Benfica.

Ricardo is in goal at Betis since late January 2009. Was on the bench in the first half of the season. Started well but looked bad in the last game Mallorca 3-3 Betis.

Eduardo is #1 in goal at Sp. Braga. He's playing in the UEFA Cup, good performances.

Daniel Fernandes, #1 goalkeeper in Bochum. Haven't seen Bochum games.

Rui Patricio returned in goal at Sporting in the last game. He had missed at least 4 games after injuring his pinky finger on his left hand.

Hilario is #2 goalkeeper at Chelsea.

4 Central defenders: Pepe (Real Madrid), Fernando Meira (Galatasaray), Bruno Alves (FC Porto), Ricardo Carvalho (Chelsea)

Who will be the pair in the central defense?

Maniche lost starting lineup position in the last 2 Atletico games. Ignacio Camacho in his place.

Under new coach Abel Resino, Maniche has been put back on the bench. His place is taken by Ignacio Camacho in the last 2 Atletico games, including today's Real Madrid 1-1 Atletico. Camacho played in the starting lineup for the second game in a row. Under former coach Javier Aguirre, Maniche was in the starting lineup.

Will Maniche still start in the Portugal team? Or Tiago instead?

Real Madrid 1-1 Atlético
Matchday 26, March 7, 2008
Santiago Bernabeu | Referee: Fernández Borbalán

Simão in starting lineup,
Maniche substitute in the 69th minute,
Pepe not playing because of suspension

I'm listening to the game on Radio Marca. Atletico hasn't beat Real Madrid at the Bernabeu since 1999!

In the last 25 minutes, Atlético had 3 goal opportunities. So far 1-1. Atletico was supposed to be winning by at least 3 goals if it converted its chances.

77th El Kun misses was alone in front of Casillas.

76th Antonio López crosses it to Simao, who passes it to Agüero but misses again.

It would be interesting if Atletico beats Real Madrid after 10 years. The narrators on Radio Marca EDU GARCÍA and ANTONIO ARENAS were saying that Maniche doesn't play as good anymore because of a missed action in injury time. El Kun had 4 chances but didn't convert any of them.

PhotobucketFeb 25, 2009- Maniche admitted that FC Porto was superior in the Atletico 2-2 FC Porto Champions League game. Maniche was not in the starting lineup. He replaced Raúl García in the second half.

He said in Spanish: "Honestly, I think they deserved to win because they created many opportunities. We knew that Oporto was a great team, with great players and were not going to give up despite the 1-0."

Maniche also admitted that the second leg at the Dragao will be "complicated" because at home the dragons are "a very difficult team." "However, if we score a goal then things can change."
