June 2009- Photo Portugal goalkeeper Daniel Fernandes visiting soccer store in Canada "North America Sports"

From blog: "NORTH AMERICA SPORTS :The Soccer Shop"

Portuguese International & German Bundesliga VFL Bochum Goalkeeper Daniel Fernandes visited North America Sports the Soccer Shop today. Daniel Fernandes played 31 matches for VFL Bochum as their number one goalkeeper for 2008/09 and Daniel has consistently been called up to the Portuguese National squad by coach Carlos Queiroz for World Cup 2010 qualification matches.

Monica08: It's always an unforgettable experience to see these players up close!

At this point I think goalkeeper Ricardo's chances of returning to the Portugal team are zero, nil. Queiroz might start the B team in the next Portugal game, friendly August 12, 2009 Liechtenstein- Portugal. Instead of using the #1 gk Eduardo, Fernandes can be in goal.

The battle for goalkeeper #2 is still on. Queiroz surprised fans by calling up Benfica's Moreira for the qualification match Albania 1-2 Portugal. If Beto outdoes himself this season wth FC Porto, Beto might be #2 for the 2 October qualification matches.

Which goalkeeper will be on the bench in the 2 crucial qualification matches in September? Denmark - Portugal, Hungary - Portugal?

Photo 3 Portugal goalkeepers in 2008- training 2 days before Portugal 5-0 Faroe Islands

This photo was first shown to me by Pantera a few weeks ago. In the few pictures I've seen with goalkeper Quim, he's always getting teased by gk Ricardo. In this picture it looks like Eduardo is teasing Quim.

The Portugal goalkeepers in 2008: Bochum's Daniel Fernandes, Sp. Braga's goalkeeper Eduardo, and Benfica's Quim.

Daniel Fernandes hasn't had much luck with Queiroz. At least he was on the bench in the last 2 Portugal games, Portugal 0-0 Sweden and Portugal 2-0 South Africa. Sp. Braga's Eduardo was in goal both times. Looks like Queiroz considers Daniel Fernandes as the #2 Portugal goalkeeper. Better than being 3rd choice and left out of the call-up list for a game.

Portugal lineup for Portugal v. Sweden, March 28, 2009

About an hour before the game, the Portugal lineup. Deco is 100% fit but is out of the starting 11. Zenith's Danny will start. Goalkeeper Eduardo beat out Beto and Bochum's Daniel Fernandes. It will be the first time Eduardo is in goal in an official Portugal game.

Defense- Ricardo Carvalho and Bruno Alves. I thought Pepe would start.
No striker! Wow!

According to Record, Queiroz had to decide between Hugo Almeida or Danny.
I'm with the reader that left this comment on the Record article, self-explanatory:
"Hugo Almeida ou Danny? - Nuno Gomes, claramente!"

Video 21-man list of Portugal squad for next 2 games Sweden (qualification) and South Africa (friendly)- No Nuno Gomes, no goalkeeper Ricardo

The 21-man call-up list of the Portugal squad was announced today on the
Federação Portuguesa de Futebol website. The next 2 Portugal games are:

Portugal v. Sweden, March 28, 2009, Estádio do Dragão, Porto, qualification match
South Africa, Lausanne, Switzerland, friendly, África do Sul

After this weekend's games, Carlos Queiroz, will add one more player to the 21-man list. Two plaeyrs called up for the first time, Nelson a defender from Betis, and goalkeeper Beto from Leixoes. Nelson, why? Betis has conceded many goals in the last month, why him and not goalkeeper Ricardo?

As a fan in the USA, how come they can't play at least one friendly here. Lots of European expats and fans here too!

21-man list:

Goalkeepers:

Daniel Fernandes (Bochum/Ale),
Eduardo (Sporting Braga)
Beto (Leixões).

Defenders:

Bruno Alves (FC Porto),
Gonçalo Brandão (Siena/Ita),
Pepe (Real Madrid/Esp),
Ricardo Carvalho (Chelsea/Ing),
Nelson (Bétis/Esp),
Bosingwa (Chelsea/Ing)
Rolando (FC Porto).

Midfielders:

Deco (Chelsea/Ing),
João Moutinho (Sporting),
Maniche (Atlético Madrid/Esp),
Raúl Meireles (FC Porto),
Duda (Málaga/Esp)
Tiago (Juventus/Ita).

Forwards:

Danny (Zenit/Rus),
Simão (Atlético Madrid/Esp),
Hugo Almeida (Werder Bremen/Ale),
Nani (Manchester United/Ing)
Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United/Ing).

Who surprised you?

No Nuno Gomes he does play a few minutes every week. Orlando Sa from Sp. Braga, I thought he'd make it. No Ricardo Quaresma either.

We also know that those are the reasons that will motivate us and that will inspire us to show great football. We need to win the game agaisnt Sweden."

02:16 Interview to Stefan Schwarz, former Sweden player, in Portuguese:
"I think that all the Swedes and the coach know that Portugal is better technically and individually. However, Sweden has the force of the team, a comapct team and well-organized team.

I could tell it's from the Euro 2008 because there was Paulo Ferreira smiling. We all know he's injured and not in the list.

Video 3 goals conceded by Portugal goalkeeper Daniel Fernandes VfL Bochum 0-3 Bayern Munich

Daniel Fernandes played today against Bayern Munich. His team lost at home by 0-3! He guessed the direction of the ball in all three goals, even was able to touch with his fingertips the ball in the first 2 goals. In the end, VfL Bochum 0-3 Bayern Munich- 0:1 Zé Roberto (32.), 0:2 Lahm (60.), 0:3 Demichelis (90.)

In the 49th minute, Podolski stepped up to the penalty sport. But his weak shot flew wide beside the goal, to the right side of Fernandes, who had even guessed wrong.

The Bavarians converted their first scoring opportunity. Zé Roberto caught a van Buyten cross and thundered a left-footed drive across Fernandes: 0-1.

Portugal goalkeeper Daniel Fernandes- will he play in Sweden v. Portugal?

Photobucket

Will Portugal goalkeeper Daniel Fernandes play in the next game Sweden v. Portugal, March 28, 2009?

In the last friendly Portugal 1-0 Finland, he was a substitute and replaced Eduardo in the 61st minute. It was the 2nd time he played for the Portugal team. The first time was back in June 5, 2007 in Al-Salmiyaah 1-1 Portugal.

Queiroz is still experimenting with the Portugal goalkeeper position. If Ricardo and Quim stay out of the next call-up list, it's likely that Fernandes will play. Unlike the last game, Queiroz doesn't have the luxury of substituting/ testing a goalkeeper. Ibrahimovic will sure be in the Sweden team so will Daniel Fernandes make important saves against the star of Inter FC?

He wears the #1 jersey in the Bundesliga team, Vfl Bochum. He's one of the 4 goalkeepers and plays in the starting lineup. The team is in 15th place with 17 points. Nice burgundy color jersey right?

The next game is in 5 days, February 21, 2009 against Arminia Bielefeld.

I wish he played in the Serie A or the Portuguese league so I could follow him more closely. He's pretty new to the national team with only 2 caps but it looks unlikely that he'll return in the next 3 games. The pressure is on for Carlos Queiroz. Criticisms center on the lack of experienced players. That includes experienced goalkeepers so Fernandes might have to give up his place for now.

What do you think of this 'warrior-style' photo of him?
