Manuel Fernandes scores only winning goal -video-for Valencia in Valladolid 0-1 Valencia, Oct. 5, 2008. Valencia 1st in La Liga table with 16 points.

Manuel Fernandes, attacking midfielder called up by Carlos Queiroz for the next 2 Portugal games, scored the winning goal for Valencia. Valencia played with their away jersey in black with orange number and name.

Video goal by Valencia's Manuel Fernandes, 52nd minute in Valladolid 0-1 Valencia, Oct. 5, 2008, Jornada 6, Matchday 6. Narration in Spanish.

Valencia has scored 13 goals this season 2008-2009. All were done by Spanish players like Villa, Mata.

This goal by Manuel Fernandes is the first goal scored by a non-Spanish player for Valencia. In the 50th minute, the game was 0-0. If Valencia didn't score, they would have received 1 point and slip down at least 2 positions in the table with 14 points. This win gave Valencia the necessary 3 points to stay on #1 with 16 points.

The last time Manuel Fernandes scored was the memorable goal against Manchester United in April 28, 2007. He scored the second goal in that Manchester United defeat, Everton 2-4 Manchester United. He was on loan to Everton.

I think Carlos Queiroz will leave Manuel Fernandes on the bench in the game against Sweden. Fernandes might be a second half substitution in the game against Albania.

Your thoughts on Valencia staying first in the La Liga table? Manuel Fernandes?

Van Nistelrooy sent-off
Van Der Vaart sent-off

I saw this game on Fox Soccer channel today. Favorite team Real Madrid. Plus at Valencia there were Miguel and Manuel Fernandes, 2 Portugal national team players. What a game. 2 Real Madrid players sent off, Van Der Vaart, and Ruud Van Nistelrooy. Until the 2nd half, Valencia was winning on the aggregate. It had the Supercup in their hands.
Schuster then made 2 changes. Argentinean Higuain, and the other substitute, both scored within minutes. Valencia could not take advantage of facing Reral Madrid with two men down. What a comeback!!

Pepe not afraid to get physical to stop Valencia from running down the middle. Played 90 minutes plus 3 minute extra time.

In the first leg, Javi Garcia played in Pepe's place. Pepe was out for suspension. In this second leg, central defender Pepe was back in the starting lineup. Pepe had a great first half not letting David Villa run down the middle and sending long-balls to the left-wing player. In the first 45 minutes Pepe was important in preventing Valencia from playing down the middle with David Villa or Joaquin. 7th minute: Pepe fouled Joaquin.

7th minute: "You see what a huge change it is having Pepe in the lineup instead of Javi Garcia. Pepe is not afraid to pbhysically match up with David Villa. So quick coming out of the center, looking to get the ball in the middle. A guy like Pepe can actually stay with him. Whereas last week, Javi Garcia could not. He decided to hold off. That's where the spaces really started."--- Fox Soccer channel commentator

Real Madrid kept possesion of the ball in the first 20 minutes. Valencia's midfield couldn't connect with Mata or Miguel and get them to go forward in the Real Madrid half of the field. 13th minute:

There's a reason why the balls have to start with Pepe. He provides stability. Of course Heinze could do the same. I already lost count of how many touches Pepe has had. Ast least a dozen, maybe two. So far the principle transporters of the ball have been Pepe and Sergio Ramos."--- Fox Soccer channel commentator

Valencia was able to do only 2 crosses. Until the 19th minute Miguel went forward on the right side.

Miguel , played the 90 minutes, plus 3 minute extra time.

Not able to on the other hand, what a difference from the first leg match. Miguel constantly up the right side making crosses to David Villa. In the first half today, he only ran across the right side 3 times. Manuel Fernandes did not play. He was on the bench. Ferndes did play in the first leg at the Mestalla.

Game stats:
Real Madrid starting lineup: Iker Casillas; Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Heinze, Torres (Drenthe, m.64); Diarra, Guti (De la Red, m.78), Van der Vaart; Robben, Raúl (Higuaín, m.79) y Van Nistelrooy.

Valencia starting lineup: Hildebrand; Miguel, Albiol (Morientes, m.81) Alexis, Moretti; Joaquín (Pablo Hernández, m.68), Albelda, Baraja, Mata (Vicente, m.60); David Silva, David Villa.

Goals: 33' 0-1, Silva de disparo ajustado al palo izquierdo. 50' 1-1, Van Nistelrooy scored from the penalty spot. 76' 2-1 Sergio Ramos remacha a placer un remate de Diarra al larguero. 85' 3-1, Substtiute De la Red con un disparo lejano colocado. 88' 4-1, Substitute Gonzalo Higuaín regatea a Hildebrand y marca a placer. 90' 4-2, Morientes bate por bajo a Casillas.

Referee: Iturralde González.
Yellow cards: 73' Heinze (Real Madrid), 49' Moretti (Valencia), 77' Alexis (Valencia)
Red cards: 39' Van der Vaart, double yellow card for Van Nistelrooy (54 y 72).
