Right-backs (lateral-direito) of the Portugal team? Bosingwa, Ferreira, Miguel, Nelson, and ?

Will Paulo Ferreira's position as Portugal right-back still be secure by October 2009? I'm not so sure.

There's Bosingwa, Ferreira, Miguel, Nelson. Carlos Queiroz only called up two of them for Portugal 0-0 Sweden and Portugal v. South Africa. They were Bosingwa and Nelson. Bosingwa got injured in the Sweden game. That leaves Nelson for the Portugal v. South Africa game.

Which of 2 right-backs will Carlos Queiroz call up for Albania - Portugal, June 6, 2009?

If Miguel doesn't make it to the list again, Sp. Braga's João Perreira can.

He's in the Selecção Nacional B today. He's preparing for the next game Portugal v. Romania, April 1, 2009. In today's Selecção Nacional B's press conference João Perreira spoke about wanting to be in the Portugal team.

João Perreira:
About eventually being called- up by Queiroz in the Portugal national team-- "I am completely prepared, but I know that it's hard and complicated to get there. There are plenty of great players like Miguel, Bosingwa, and Nélson. nevertheless, I'm working every day to one day accomplish the objective of arriving to the Portugal national team."

(Estou completamente preparado, mas sei que é difícil e complicado chegar lá. Há muito bons jogadores o Miguel, o Bosingwa, o Nélson… mas vou trabalhar, todos os dias, para conseguir, um dia, alcançar esse objectivo.)

About having Carlos Queiroz on the bench in the Portgal v. Romania on April 1, 2009-- "The job of this Selecção B is to prepare players to eventually get to the Portugal national team. It's important for him to be on the bench and personally observe our game."

(O papel desta Selecção B é preparar eventuais jogadores para a Selecção A e é importante que ele esteja no banco a observar, pessoalmente, o nosso jogo", frisou

About feeling the pressure -- "I don't think so. Any player has to feel motivated no matter who the coach is."
(acho que não, qualquer jogador tem de se sentir motivado em vir à Selecção, independentemente de qual for o treinador)

------
Pereira played in the Portugal sub21 in Holland in 2007. I'm looking forward for him to continue getting experience in the international stage.

Video highlights of Portugal 0-0 Albania, Oct 15, 2008

Here are some highlights of the Portugal 0-0 Albania qualification game, October 15, 2008. How much can there be in a goalless draw right?

Not one player of the Portugal national team went to the "flash-interview," the usual post-game interview with the media.

News anchor: Portugal tied against Albania in Braga. Albania was playing with 10 men in the end. With this draw, Portugal falls to 4th place of Group 1, 2010 world cup qualification.

01:07 Analysis by Ribeiro Cristovao:
"Portugal did a poor, sad, game. Things are now harder. Denmark has 5 points and can do 8 points later. Hungary has 4 points. Once more, every player tried to win the game on his own. Queiroz has to tell the players that a football game is played by 11 players. Our stars (vedetas) Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani who came in the second half tried to solve the game on their own.

03:38 We had a great game against Denmark. We already played bad against Sweden."
How come the players like Cristiano Ronaldo are another in their clubs?
"Well, Ronaldo was injured for a long time."

Some players recognized:
00:16: defense by Miguel, Albania player running on the right side, made a cross, Miguel blocked it

01:54 Albania player committing a foul on Cristiano Ronaldo. CR7 was running on the right side. The linesman raises the flag, referee shows the yellow card to the Albania player. CR7 stays on the ground with a hand over his mouth.

02:00 45' On the left side, cross by Paulo Ferreira right outside the area. Unclear to which player it was. He was right in front of the Albania gk yet incredibly shot to the left of the net, and the gk grabbed the ball.

02:21 52' Portugal player on the right side, cross into the area, Portugal player heads it wide

02:34 88' Cristiano Ronaldo running from the right to the middle, shooting just wide, to the right of the net.

Video Simão Sabrosa, Nuno Gomes in gym, Miguel, Jorge Andrade, Miguel in Portugal training camp 2006 world cup

I loved watching the casual atmosphere of the players at the team hotel. They joke among each other. My favorite part was Simao and Nuno Gomes doing chest presses. This video is from the 2006 world cup, show called "SIC Geração Scolari - Clube Portugal."

Screenshots:

01:48 Jorge Andrade interviewing Miguel, holding a shoe as a microphone. Says in Portuguese "Miguel gets into the area, and scores gooool." Miguel laughs.

Both are wearing the green Portugal polo shirt. Jorge Andrade has his jersey on the lap.

02:04 Miguel, wearing a green Portugal polo shirt, shows us where he's staying, his room. "This is my suite."

Narrator: "The hours and minutes are counted and organized. One can witness the time for calmness and for leisure."

In the gym.

Jorge Andrade on a bycicle.
02:40 Simão working out in the chest press machine without his shirt. See the tatoo on his left shoulder.

Goalkeeper Ricardo and Nuno Gomes.

Paulo Ferreira. Looks like him, he's looking away from the camera outside the window to the fans.

05:38 On the airplane:
Ricardo Carvalho with green jacket.
Cristiano Ronaldo with the pilots.

The team on the team bus heading to a hotel. The players wearing green jackets getting off the bus and entering the hotel with their carry on-luggage. Nani, Bruno Alves walking toward the eating hall.

See how the Portugal team looked in the training session during the 2006 world cup. The training outfits haven't changed much. It was dark green in 2006, and light green with a golden stripe in the Euro 2008 training sessions.

Portugal squad to play in Brazil for Brazil- Portugal on Nov. 19, 2008 No Nuno Gomes, Miguel Veloso, Ricardo Quaresma!

Brazil - Portugal
friendly, Nov. 19, 2008
Estádio Walmir Campelo Bezerra, Brasilia, Brazil

Carlos Queiroz announced the 20-man Portugal squad to play for Brazil on the FPF site. (Os 20 jogadores convocados para o particular entre o Brasil e Portugal)

First of all, who is NOT in the list:
Nuno Gomes, Miguel Veloso and Ricardo Quaresma

Goalkeepers:
Eduardo (Braga);
Quim (Benfica);

Midfielders:

Maniche (Atlético de Madrid);
Simão (Atlético de Madrid);
Deco (Chelsea)
Danny (Dínamo de Moscovo);
Raul Meireles (FC Porto);
Tiago (Juventus);
Basel, June 19- Deco, Cristiano Ronaldo and Paulo Ferreira in Euro 2008 Photo: record.pt

César Peixoto
Nani (Manchester United);
João Moutinho (Sporting);

Defenders:

Bosingwa, (Chelsea)
Paulo Ferreira (Chelsea)
Bruno Alves (FC Porto);
Fernando Meira (Galatasaray)
Pepe (Real Madrid)
Miguel (Valência).
Rolando

Forwards:

Hugo Almeida (Werder Bremen);
Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United);

------
A few surprises:
Two new players called up for the first time-César Peixoto (Braga) and Rolando,
Tiago's back- Tiago played all 90 minutes with Juventus 4-1 Genoa today. The last time he was called up was in 2007.

I can't believe he left out Nuno Gomes and Ricardo Quaresma. Forward Helder Postiga will have to keep waiting. Hugo Almeida is playing regularly already scored two goals with Werder Bremen in the last month. However Almeida has disappointed in the last 2 Portugal games. He couldn't score in the friendly against Faroe Islands (90 minutes on the field). He also missed goal opportunities in qualifier Portugal - Albania and robbed Nuno Gomes of the starting lineup position. Yet Queiroz insists on Almeida. Where are the other forwards Yannick, Postiga...?

Since it's a friendly, we'll see what 6 changes Queiroz makes to the starting lineup. Carvalho's substitute will be Bruno Alves.

My starting 11 includes:
Quim
Paolo Ferreira - Pepe - Bruno Alves - Bosingwa
Maniche - Deco- Simao - Nani
Hugo Almeida

Portugal 0-0 Albania
Oct. 15, 2008, 2010 WC qualifier Group 1
Estádio AXA, Braga, Portugal
12:45pm USA Pacific time

---------Substitutions: 53' Joao Moutinho out, Ricardo Quaresma in ----------24' TELI in, Beqiri out.
----------------------------53' Danny out, Nani in------------------------------------46' Bogdani out, Vrapi in
----------------------------74' Miguel out, Nuno Gomes in-------------------------76' Duro out, Berisha in

42nd minute- Albania player Teli Sent off. Albania playing with 10 men. If Portugal can't beat Albania having the extra man advantage. Serious trouble. Portugal gained 2 points in the last 3 games, 1 defeat (Portugal 2-3 Denmark), 2 GOALLESS draws (Sweden 0-0 Portugal), (Portugal 0-0 Albania)

Ricardo Quaresma and Nuno Gomes on the bench. Paolo Ferreira in the starting lineup playing as a left-back. Zenith's Danny for the first time in the Portugal starting lineup in an official game.

Carlos Queiroz made 3 changes from the last game, Sweden 0-0 Portugal

This is exciting because there will be a new Portugal starting lineup. I was championing for Danny and Ricardo Quaresma to be in the starting lineup.

-- Defense- right back- Chelsea defender, Jose Bosingwa is injured. His right-back position in the starting 11 goes to Miguel. Paolo Ferreira will play as a left-back again.

-- Midfield- Manuel Fernandes and Danny are the other 2 surprises in the starting 11.

Who paid the price in the starting 11 from Sweden 0-0 Portugal?

Fernando Meira- replaced by Manuel Fernandes, more attacking midfielder

Raul Meireles- replaced by Danny. First time he'll be in the Portugal starting lineup in an official game.

Official starting lineups:

Portugal -- 1 Quim, 2 Bruno Alves, 3 Paulo Ferreira, 4 Miguel, 5 Pepe, 6 Raul Meireles, 7 Cristiano Ronaldo, 8 Manuel Fernandes, 9 Hugo Almeida, 10 João Moutinho, 11 Danny

Substitutes: 12 Eduardo, 13 Antunes, 14 Fernando Meira, 15 Carlos Martins, 16 Nani, 17 Nuno Gomes, 18 Quaresma

ALBÂNIA -- Arjan Beqaj; Elvin Beqiri, Debatik Curri, Kristi Vangielli, Ervin Bulku, Altin Lala, Lorik Cana, Klodian Duro, Ansi Agolli, Ervin Skela, Erjon Bogdoni.

Assistant Referee 2: Christoph BORNHORST (GER)
Fourth official: Thorsten KINHÖFER (GER)

Yellow cards: 35' Teli (Albania), 40' Lala (Albania) foul committed on Joao Moutinho,

Here's what Fernando Eurico, Manuel Chaves, Manuel Queiróz, Paulo Miguel Castro and Teófilo Fernando, on Antena 1 radio are saying:

Once again Portugal didn't start strong. 10 minutes already and not attacking. Portugal is not attacking and not involving the home public. If it continues like this the home fans will go to sleep. The public is starting to boo the team. Not much portugal so far in these 10 minutes. 24th minute- Cristiano Ronaldo falls down. Looked lie a penalty to me. They owe us 2 penalties in the last 5 days. In the end these things will matter.

It's over. Portugal with this unbelievable result. Fans booing the team. Players applauding the home fans. Albanian fans celebrating.

20th minute- Nuno Gomes and Ricardo Quaresma warming up. Carlos Queiroz doesn't seem to like what he's seeing.
34'- Free kick by Cristiano Ronaldo, not well taken.

35' Home fans in Braga are booing the Portugal team.

63- after a goal opportunity by Portugal, the home fans are cheering the team on.

65- fans yelling 'Portugal, Portugal'

76'- Albania goal opportunity- Albania player just entering Berisha, shot off-target over the bar. UNBELIEVABLE one man down and creating chances with less than 15 minutes to go.

Portugal starting lineup, after the 3 substitutions in 81st minute:

Two forwards Nuno Gomes, and Hugo Almeida!
Quim
Paolo Ferreira, Pepe, Bruno Alves
Raul Meireles, Manuel Fernandes, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ricardo Quaresma, Nani,
Nuno Gomes, Hugo Almeida

Popular Portugal players

Ricardo Quaresma- This time entered earlier in the 52nd minute. He replaced midfielder Joao Moutinho.

Paolo Ferreira Played in the starting lineup as a left back. Had the job of making crosses into the area. In the second hald, created a goal opportunity for Portugal: 46th minute ran on the left-side, pass to the far post for Danny, Danny didn't reach it well and hit Albania defender Beqai.

Nuno Gomes On the bench like in Sweden 0-0 Portugal. Hugo Almeida took his place in the starting lineup.

Zenith's Danny He had the chance to prove himself but could not score or reach passes. Queiroz replaced him in the 53rd minute with Nani. Frist half, 36th minute (Portugal's first goal opportunity), he played as a forward too, free kick taken by Cristiano Ronaldo, Danny unable to score on the rebound.

Three Chelsea players out for injury so not in the call-up list: Deco, Ricardo Carvalho, Jose Bosingwa injured yesterday Oct. 14, 2008, on the knee.

Van Nistelrooy sent-off
Van Der Vaart sent-off

I saw this game on Fox Soccer channel today. Favorite team Real Madrid. Plus at Valencia there were Miguel and Manuel Fernandes, 2 Portugal national team players.What a game. 2 Real Madrid players sent off, Van Der Vaart, and Ruud Van Nistelrooy. Until the 2nd half, Valencia was winning on the aggregate. It had the Supercup in their hands.
Schuster then made 2 changes. Argentinean Higuain, and the other substitute, both scored within minutes. Valencia could not take advantage of facing Reral Madrid with two men down. What a comeback!!

Pepe not afraid to get physical to stop Valencia from running down the middle. Played 90 minutes plus 3 minute extra time.

In the first leg, Javi Garcia played in Pepe's place. Pepe was out for suspension. In this second leg, central defender Pepe was back in the starting lineup. Pepe had a great first half not letting David Villa run down the middle and sending long-balls to the left-wing player. In the first 45 minutes Pepe was important in preventing Valencia from playing down the middle with David Villa or Joaquin. 7th minute: Pepe fouled Joaquin.

7th minute: "You see what a huge change it is having Pepe in the lineup instead of Javi Garcia. Pepe is not afraid to pbhysically match up with David Villa. So quick coming out of the center, looking to get the ball in the middle. A guy like Pepe can actually stay with him. Whereas last week, Javi Garcia could not. He decided to hold off. That's where the spaces really started."--- Fox Soccer channel commentator

Real Madrid kept possesion of the ball in the first 20 minutes. Valencia's midfield couldn't connect with Mata or Miguel and get them to go forward in the Real Madrid half of the field. 13th minute:

There's a reason why the balls have to start with Pepe. He provides stability. Of course Heinze could do the same. I already lost count of how many touches Pepe has had. Ast least a dozen, maybe two. So far the principle transporters of the ball have been Pepe and Sergio Ramos."--- Fox Soccer channel commentator

Valencia was able to do only 2 crosses. Until the 19th minute Miguel went forward on the right side.

Miguel , played the 90 minutes, plus 3 minute extra time.

Not able to on the other hand, what a difference from the first leg match. Miguel constantly up the right side making crosses to David Villa. In the first half today, he only ran across the right side 3 times. Manuel Fernandes did not play. He was on the bench. Ferndes did play in the first leg at the Mestalla.

Game stats:
Real Madrid starting lineup: Iker Casillas; Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Heinze, Torres (Drenthe, m.64); Diarra, Guti (De la Red, m.78), Van der Vaart; Robben, Raúl (Higuaín, m.79) y Van Nistelrooy.

Valencia starting lineup: Hildebrand; Miguel, Albiol (Morientes, m.81) Alexis, Moretti; Joaquín (Pablo Hernández, m.68), Albelda, Baraja, Mata (Vicente, m.60); David Silva, David Villa.

Goals: 33' 0-1, Silva de disparo ajustado al palo izquierdo. 50' 1-1, Van Nistelrooy scored from the penalty spot. 76' 2-1 Sergio Ramos remacha a placer un remate de Diarra al larguero. 85' 3-1, Substtiute De la Red con un disparo lejano colocado. 88' 4-1, Substitute Gonzalo Higuaín regatea a Hildebrand y marca a placer. 90' 4-2, Morientes bate por bajo a Casillas.

Referee: Iturralde González.
Yellow cards: 73' Heinze (Real Madrid), 49' Moretti (Valencia), 77' Alexis (Valencia)
Red cards: 39' Van der Vaart, double yellow card for Van Nistelrooy (54 y 72).

01:25- Sergio Ramos goal - from a corner kick. You can see the Valencia players protesting to the linesman. It took a few minutes for the referee to confirm his decision, the goal to stand.

The 3-2 result of the first leg of the Supercopa 2008 suggests this will be a game full of emotion, cover of AS August 24, 2008

This was the cover of this morning's AS paper. Before the Supercopa 2008. Did you watch the game? I saw it on Fox Soccer channel.

Pepe in Real Madrid, Miguel, and Manuel Fernandes in Valencia as the Portuguese national team players. Either way one was going to win the Supercopa 2008, important pre-season trophy.

Robinho. My favorite player in the Brazil national team didn't have to publicly say that he wants to go to Chelsea, in the week. Now he makes the covers before this important game before the season starts next week.

In the 1st leg at the Mestalla Robinho played the first half. Not many goal opportunities from him. It was all Valencia. As long as he's under contract with Real Madrid, he plays for the club. Period.

AS cover August 24, 2008

The 3-2 result of the first leg of the Supercopa 2008 suggests this will be a game full of emotion,

Real Madrid, League champion, Valencia cup champion.

ROBINHO

Schuster includes him in the call-up list but Real Madrid fears he won't show up.

Miguel playing at Valencia CF in 2008-2009

Portugal right-back Miguel plays for Valencia. Wears the #23 jersey. Under Scolari in the Euro 2008 he was the 2nd choice right-back. Order: Bosingwa, Miguel, Paolo Ferreira.

With new coach Carlos Queiroz, we still need to see if he'll be in the starting lineup instead of Bosingwa.

Name: Luis Miguel Brito García Monteiro
Height: 1,79 m.
Weight: 78 Kg.
Birth: Lisboa (Portugal) 04/01/1980
Ingreso : 18/08/2005
Debut : 17/09/2005
Position : Defense, right-back, usually goes forward on the right side. Does crosses into the area for David Villa.
Internacional caps: 24 veces
From: Benfica

He's part of the Valencia CF team. Photo for the 2008-2009 season. Valenciacf.com

Miguel is one of the 3 Portuguese players at Valencia. The other two are: midfielder Manuel Fernandes, and Hugo Viana.

Your thoughts on Miguel at Valencia, does Queiroz need to make him a right-back in the starting 11 in the Portugal national team?
