Defender Fernando Meira moved to Turkey, signed with Galatasaray

30 year-old, Portugal central defender, Fernando Meira moved from Stuttgart to Galatasaray, the Turkish club. Out of curiosit I googled the club's official website, www.galatasaray.org, for more news on Meira. He's on the splash page check it out!

Once on the website, it was all in Turkish. I couldn't find the "English version" button. There was an article that he was presented yesterday, July 22 in the press conference with the Galatasaray jersey. I assume this is when he signed his contract:

According to UEFA.com, Meira signed a 3 year deal with Turkish champions Galatasaray AS after being released by German side VfB Stuttgart.

Meira said: "I believe I have turned a new page with this world-famous club. I am well aware that Galatasaray not only aspire to domestic successes but also want significant achievements in Europe. My target before joining Galatasaray was to sign a long-term contract with a top-level club. Now my aim is to win the league and play for Portugal again in the [2010 FIFA] World Cup."

Monica 08's thoughts:

The good thing is that Galatasaray will play in the Champions League. They'll start their UEFA Champions League campaign in the third qualifying round.

I wonder just how often Fernando Meira will play there. I don't follow the Turkish league a lot. Do you? Now with Aragones and Guiza at Fenerbache, I might try to look at the results every week. Wonder if Meira plays this season in the famous derbies, "Galatasaray - Fenerbache", "Fenerbache- Galatasaray".

Let's see if Meira's able to stop Spanish forward Dani Guiza from scoring with Fenerbache. The other big signing Galatasaray had was Kewell from Liverpool.

Relating it to the Portugal national team

In the Portugal national team he was 3rd choice for central defender. At least during the Euro 2008, Ricardo Carvalho was the 'untouchable' in the central defense in the starting lineup. The choices then were Pepe, Bruno Alves, and 3rd choice, Fernando Meira. If Meira doesn't play regularly who will Queiroz call?

Meira said in his press conference that he hopes to play in the 2010 world cup. He'll be 32 years old and there's already stiff competition from Pepe and Bruno Alves this year. He'll need to really work to convince Queiroz to put him instead of Pepe or Bruno Alves. There's no way Ricardo Carvalho is taken off the starting lineup when he's fit.
