About the game: Match day 3: Away win at the Wildpark
FC koln travelled to Karlsruher SC and won 2-0 (0-0) on the third match day of the Bundesliga season. The goals on the night, in front of 29,308 spectators at the Wildpark Stadium, were scored by Milivoje Novakovic (72’) and Sergiu Radu (84’).
Sluggish start
FC coach Christoph Daum made one change to the eleven which drew 1-1 with Eintracht Frankfurt last weekend. In the middle of the park Adil Chihi got the nod ahead of Wilfried Sanou.
The importance of the game was clear to see right from the beginning with both teams determined but unwilling to take risks and leave room for the opposing side to counter attack. KSC's Joshua Kennedy had the first chance on goal in the game after a quarter hour but he failed to cleanly connect with the pass from Sebastian Freis and miscued his shot.
Özat collapses
In the 25th minute there was a shock for everyone in the stadium. FC captain Ümit Özat collapsed without influence from any other player and had to be treated for several minutes as he lay unconscious on the pitch. Having regained consciousness, Özat was then stretchered away and replaced at the back by Kevin McKenna. The game never really recovered from the interruption for the rest of the half and the sides went into the break with the score locked at 0-0.
KSC raise the bar
After the re-start, the home side put the pressure on and forced FC keeper Faryd Mondragon into action. With just one second half minute played, the Köln keeper saved from Bradley Carnell and nine minutes later the Columbian kept his side on level terms with a fantastic stop from a Freis shot.
As the half progressed, KSC appeared to tire and FC got the upper hand. A long ball from the back found Petit, who in turn picked out Pedro Geromel with a pass. The Brazilian skipped past his marker and crossed to the back post where Milivoje Novakovic was perfectly placed to nod Köln into a 1-0 lead (72’).
FC seal the points
Having gone behind, the home side went determinedly in search of an equaliser and came close on a number of occasions but it was Christoph Daum’s side that proved more effective. A long ball was nodded on to Sergiu Radu by 'Nova' and the striker duped KSC keeper Markus Miller to make it 2-0 and seal the points for FC Köln.
