Nuno Gomes' contract with Benfica expires at the end of this season 2008-09. Benfica is going through the negotiations yet there hasn't been an agreement yet much less a signature. Rui Costa, Benfica sporting director, wants Nuno Gomes to stay ad respects what he has done for Benfica. Nuno Gomes is not the only one that Benfica is dealing with. There's also Luisão, defender.
At the Benfica gala at the club's 105th anniversary, Rui Costa said of both Nuno Gomes and Luisão in Portuguese:
"Let's not confuse things. Being a symbol of the club doesn't guarantee you quality, but in these cases, I want the continuity of these players. Not just because of what they give to Benfica but what they can still give to Benfica. Because of their quality, continuity is important and Benfica is interested in that."
About taking long to sign the contract:
"The time it's taking is normal. Benfica wants the players to play consistently and the player wants to stay. I confirm that both parties want this."

Monica 08 thoughts: Simão left Benfica. Rui Costa left Benfica. I'd like to see Nuno Gomes challenge himself in a league abroad either in Spain or Italy. Rui Costa had a fabulous career at AC Milan. Simão is playing in the Champions League with Atletico Madrid.
Nuno Gomes can still be the symbol of Benfica. Why not copy Rui Costa and come back toward the end of his career.
A team like AS Roma and Udinese could use a striker like Nuno Gomes. I wish I could say, Fiorentina, Juve, Inter, AC Milan or even Sampdoria. Unfortunately, he'll stay on the bench in those teams.
Fiorentina- Mutu is the star striker. Pazzini even left in the January window because he was tired on being on the bench and not playing.
Juve- Trezeguet is back. Amauri has scored in almost every game since the beginning of the season. Iaquinta is a substitute. Gomes would probably be the 3rd choice.
Inter- Ibrahimovic has his starting 11 place guaranteed. Adriano and Balotelli are the other choices. Mourinho doesn't include Crespo in more games not even as a substitute.
AC Milan- When there is Pato, Inzaghi, who needs another striker? Milan needs to look at midfielders and defenders instead.
