Nov 17, 2008- Video Portugal striker Hugo Almeida talks in Portuguese about the Nov 19 friendly against Brazil- 2 days before the game.
(Hugo Almeida, atacante de Portugal fala sobre o jogo contra o Brasil.)
He was the only striker called up by Prof. Carlos Queiroz. Hugo Almeida again disappointed in that game. He says in Portuguese:
About facing Brazil on Nov 19, 2008-
"Brazil is a very good team, one of the best in the world. It's always good to face a team like Brazil."
00:25 Remembering the last result Brazil 0-2 Portugal-
"Yes I remember beating one of the best teams in the world. We will do all we can to win again. That game was a friendly, part of the buildup for the 2006 world cup in Germany."
00:48 How is it going to feel to face one of your teammates at Werder Bremen, Diego?- "In the game he is going to be my opponent not my teammate. He's going to give his all for his country and I'm going to give my all for my country. May the best win."
I was trying out 2 features of Dailymotion .com. To see the "Miguel Veloso interviews" playlist at once, I tried out "video zap" "jukebox" and "videowall." They're some of his interviews in this season Liga Sagres 2008-2009. I like it better than Youtube's custom video player.

Video Sporting CP in UEFA Magazine Nov 2008- Report in French
UEFA Magazine covered the youth academies of European clubs like Marseille. This video (Nov 2008), is the one of Sporting (Sporting Clube Portugal). Famous players to come out of there: Nani, Simao Sabrosa and Cristiano Ronaldo.
00:26 Carlos Dias- Youth coach, Sporting "We look for players who really have a connection with the ball. It doesn't matter if they're strong, tall or skinny. Nani and Ronaldo are two good examples. They were fragile and they became good players. The first team has players that come from the Sporting academy. We focus on technique."
Nov 26, 2008-Video Simao Sabrosa interview in UEFA Magazine in French. He speaks in Portuguese but is dubbed in French.
Simao Sabrosa is going through a positive time in his career. With Atletico Madrid's results in the Champions League, Simao comes to chat with us at UEFA.com.
00:15 About his beginnings with Sporting CP Simao Sabrosa "Sporting CP was important for me. Especially when I began my career. It gave me the opportunity to play at a professional level. I spent a lot of years at Sporting. Everyone of them was important."
00:35 About his time in Barcelona- "The 2 years I played there- they're very important for me. I had the chance to work with experienced coaches. I learned a lot from them. I had the opportunity to play with players who were alredy player-of-the-year like Rivaldo, Figo and the current coach Guardiola. They're all important players.
Even if you just train with them you do learn from them. They were very positive years. It was my own decision to leave Barcelona. I didn't play the games I wanted to play. I also didn't have the opportunities I wanted. Therefore, I left Barcelona. I had the possibility of playing with Benfica. That's what I did."
01:40 About returning home and playing with Benfica "When one returns home, the most important thing is to be happy. At Barcelona it didn't always work out well. When I was with Barcelona, in the evenings I wouldn't be happy when I came home. At Benfica I was really happy."
02:23 About leaving Benfica after 6 years "I had offers from other clubs. I couldn't reach an agreement. I think it's a good thing to come back to the Spanish league. It's more competitive. There are teams that were weak before. Now, they're not as weak. Even if these teams aren't big clubs, this proves that players have more quality."
03:13 About one day playing the English Premier League "It continues to be a dream of mine. Football over there- it has great expectations. I'd like to play there one day."
Dec 1, 2008- Video in Portuguese, Helder Postiga, Daniel Carrico, Bruno Pereirinha- reaction to victory

Portugal striker Helder Postiga scored the first goal of the game in the 8th minute. Will his momentum be enough to be in Queiroz's call-up list for the next Portugal game?
Video Miguel Veloso after defeat against England at Wembley -Under-21 Sept 2008
(Portuguese: Declarações do sub-capitão da selecção portuguesa de esperanças após a derrota com a Inglaterra no Estádio de Wembley, em jogo da fase de qualificação para o Euro 2009 da categoria.)
Qualifying round for the Euro 2009 Under 21
The Portugal Under-21 team had to get a draw or a victory against England in order to pass the group 3 of the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. England had a six-point lead over second-placed Portugal . A draw from this game guaranteed England of a top spot. Unfortunately Portugal lost. England 2-0 Portugal, Sept 5, 2008.
Miguel Veloso speaking in Portuguese:
"Things happen. What's important now is to think of the next game."
Honestly, do you really believe there is still a chance to qualify for the Euro 2009?
Miguel Veloso "Yes, I think that there are 5 teams like us with the same points."
Portugal Under-21 is in the 8th place
Miguel Veloso "But hope is the last thing that dies."
Sept 18, 2008- Video Miguel Veloso in Portuguese- reaction to Barcelona 3-1 Sporting, Group C Matchday 1 of Champions League
(Portuguese: Declarações de Miguel Veloso depois da derrota por 3-1 em Camp Nou, num jogo a contar para a primeira jornada do Grupo C da Liga dos Campeões.)
Miguel Veloso:
"We knew it would be a difficult game. Despite the momentum of Barcelona, we know the Barcelona has great players.
They showed it again. Unfortunately we don't have momentum from our last 2 games in the league either. But we have to now focus on the next games."
Nov 22, 2008- Video Miguel Veloso in Portuguese- Pre-game press conference against Naval, Matchday 9 of Portuguese league (Liga Sagres)
By Nov 22, 2008 Sporting CP was having its worst period of the 2008-2009 season. They went through 2 consecutive defeats against important clubs:
FC Porto (reigning champions) and
Leixoes (surprise team, promoted in 2007, that was first in the table).
00:35 Miguel Veloso says in Portuguese
"Besides the defeat against Leixoes, I think we did have a bad perfomance. That was a low-moment but we will look ahead."
01:11 "We are going through a tough time that we didn't expect. Because for us, Sporting has to win every game. Unfortunately that didn't happen. Sporting always goes into the game to win it. In any game."
----
Miguel Veloso's new hairstyle, dark brown short enough for that 'spiky' look. No long blonde hair like in the Euro 2008. I prefer the long-blonde-hair-tied-in-a ponytail look from the 2007-2008 season.
Video Miguel Veloso goal in Sporting CP 2-5 Barcelona, CL game Matchday 5 Champions League. Veloso's first goal in the 2008-2009 Champions League
(Portuguese: Grande golo de livre directo marcado por Miguel Veloso na pesada derrota do Sporting por 2-5 frente ao Barcelona, em jogo a contar para a 5ª jornada da edição 2008/09 da Liga dos Campeões.)
This is a beautiful goal, free-kick taken by Miguel Veloso. Because there was a hand-ball by Rafa Marquez, Mexico defender, the referee awarded this free-kick. The replays show Marquez DID NOT touch the ball with his hand but with his shoulder.
These types of goals are a characteristic of midfielder Miguel Veloso. He scored a goal like this in the UEFA Under-21 tournament in 2007.
As a Sporting fan, this was painful to watch. Sporting going down 3-0 at home! I give credit to Sporting who fought back to bring the game to 2-3. Once Caneira made the 'own goal' it was game-over again. What a difference of quality between the Barcelona and Sporting players. Sporting couldn't keep the ball in the midfield at all.
Bottom line- Sporting CP was already qualified for the Champions League knockout stages. With this defeat they go in as second place and Barcelona is the group's first place.
July 24, 2008- Video Rui Costa in Portuguese '3 more signings' in the Benfica press conference.
In the 2008 pre-season Benfica started with high hopes as always. Rui Costa was prepared to sign great players, at least 3. It's the first season that Rui Costa serves as Benfica Sports director, and not as a professional footballer.
Rui Costa says in Portuguese:
00:10 "We have a few names. Obviously I'm not going to say who. The market is not closed yet for Benfica. I'll follow our internal timing and the deadline is not here yet.
How many players am I talking about? At least 3. Luis Garcia is a good player. But he's not crucial. He's not the only player. He's part of the list of Benfica but he's not the only one on our list. The Benfica squad will be modified. It was part of the plans. I had the opportunity to observe the team. During the next week, I think some players will leave the Benfica squad."
Aug. 29, 2008- Video Rui Costa, Benfica sporting director (Director Desportivo Benfica) in Portuguese stating that there are no offers for Nuno Gomes.
What has former AC Milan player Rui Costa been up to these days?
As Benfica sports director he has to deal with tough times in Benfica these days.
-- UEFA cup- defeat at home Benfica 0-2 Galatasaray. This defeat AT HOME now gave them no choice but to win the next 2 UEFA Cup games.
-- UEFA Cup thrashing of Benfica in Greece: Olympiakos 5-1 Benfica. (video of goals, lineups here) Rui Costa had visited the training ground the day after to have a talk with the team. Benfica had to win this game to go to the knockout stages.
-- On Monday Dec 1, 2008, Benfica drew at home in the Portuguese league had their home game and with a victory they could have gone to first place in the table! They were winning 2-1 and in injury time conceded a goal and the game ended in a draw.
Benfica had not been first place in the table for more than 2 seasons!
Nuno Gomes was not in the call-up list because he is still injured.
In the video Rui Costa says in Portuguese:
"We don't have any offers for Nuno Gomes. We are not worried about this situation. Therefore, I repeat, there are no offers for Nuno. I haven't heard anything. The truth is there isn't anything. We also aren't worried with that situation."
Aug 28, 2008- Video of UEFA awards 2008 in English.
I liked the first part. There's a close-up on the awards. You can read the names Terry, Lampard, and Petr Cech's award of Best goalkeeper of the year. You hear the winners:
00:22 Petr Cech-
"It's always nice to be honored. You got the vote from people involved in the Champions League. From people who really understand, who really know, who had more impact. This is more credit to the winners. I am really pleased to have won it again."
01:09 John Terry "We've done very well to get where we are. To be seeded in the top of the group. It's gonna be tough. There's a couple of really hard groups."
01:38 Frank Lampard "It's very high standard. I've been very proud ot be in their company. Eventually it's very nice to win it."

May 23, 2008- Video Cristiano Ronaldo post-game interview in English, Champions League final in Moscow - UEFA Magazine
00:15 Cristiano Ronaldo speaking in English.
"We created more chances than Chelsea. We score a good goal. I scored a good goal. We had an opportunity to close the game. In the second half, Chelsea played better. They created a few chances. An d you know, the penalty, is like a lottery. Anything can win."
00:47 When Terry missed, did you feel relieved?
Cristiano Ronaldo "Yes, to be honest yes."
00:52 You were laying down, what was going through your head?
Cristiano Ronaldo "I expressed like that. The feeling is great. We win the Champions League but I feel very proud. I feel good. You know, the lads worked very well. It's a great night for us."
Video Cristiano Ronaldo wins ballon d'or 2008- from RTP in Portuguese
'Bola De Ouro, conquistou mais um trofeu'
This report repeats what's said in other tv reports, he's the third Portuguese to win the Ballon D'or after Eusebio and Figo. He practically won everything Champions League, Premier League, Golden Boot. Some clips of Cristiano Ronaldo speaking about his previous 2 awards.
00:36- Clip Cristiano Ronaldo speaking in English when he accepted the UEFA Player of the year 2008.
"Champions League is a high level. Every player likes to play in this competition. To be the best, for me, it's great. Thank you to everyone."

Figo and Simao saying in Portuguese that they're happy that Cristiano Ronaldo won the "Bola de Ouro" (Ballon d'or 2008). Audio clips that was on this RTP news report.
Figo- "I think that this is an extraordinary thing. Few people achieve it."
Simao- "For what Cristiano did last season, I htink Cristiano deserves it. And deserves to be the best."

It's a nice photo of Cristiano Ronaldo in action. According to his jersey 'Moscow 2008' it was during the Champions League final.
Pepe, who's recent sub-par performance in Getafe 3-1 Real Madrid, and the famous Brazil 6-2 Portugal, is injured again. He felt pain in the left leg during the Getafe game. Now he's ruled out for at least one month.
Pepe had not played for Real Madrid (because he was still recovering from injury) the weekend before the Brazil 6-2 Portugal friendly. His club was surprised to see him play 90 minutes in that game. The last goal by Adriano exposed Portugal's weak central defense.
Nov 19, 2008 he played for Portugal. December 1, 2008 he's injured again.
Cristiano Ronaldo won the 'Ballon d'or' 2008. It's the 53rd edition of the French magazine 'France Football.'
By how many points did he win, who came in 4th place?
Cristiano Ronaldo received 446 points of 480 possible.
Placing by votes:
2. Lionel Messi (ARG/Barcelona) - 281 pts.
3. Fernando Torres (ESP/Liverpool) - 179 pts.
4. Iker Casillas (ESP/Real Madrid) - 133 pts.
5. Xavi (ESP/Barcelona) - 97 pts.

It wasn't a surprise because he won the Champions League, the Premier League, the Golden Boot. Glad for him.

So lucky to be there. Most of the times there's video showing Portugal training all the close-ups are on Cristiano Ronaldo. What a relief to see this video ;-)
I was so happy to see close-ups on Paolo Ferreira, Pepe and others stretching.

Quaresma is not having a great time at Inter. He is struggling to convince Mourinho of a place in the starting lineup. Recent events in just 3 months:
- Quaresma in the starting lineup for the first games. Even playing 90 minutes in the famous Italian derby Milan-Inter.
- Began to be replaced in the second half.
- Mourinho gave him permission to return to Portugal to regroup for 3 days. Mourinho had explained in the press conference that Quaresma is here alone without family.
- Played in the second half of the defeat, CL game Inter 0-1. Panathinaikos
- Mourinho dropped him from the squad for last Saturday's Inter 2-1 Napoli. According to Mourinho, he trained at 25%.
Specifically Jose Mourinho explained in Italian Quaresma's absense from the call-up list in the Nov. 20, 2008 press conference, after the victory Inter 2-1 Napoli:
"If one player gives only 25 % during the week's training sessions, for me that is not enough. I'm not afraid of making difficult choices, not even when it has to do with Quaresma.
I brought him to Inter but I don't give privileges to anyone. I make the choices that are adequate to the situation of the team. But I have one quality, I am ready to forget.
If by Tuesday he who wasn't called up shows me what I expect from them, I have no problem. You saw this with Adriano, he was dropped for a few games. He returned for the Juventus game and did well."
PHOTO: Tuesday, Nov 25, 2008- Appiano Gentile- Ricardo Quaresma in the Inter training session. Defender Samuel with the orange vest and Jose Mourinho with the big brown jacket.
With Figo back from injury, Quaresma's competition just got harder. Quaresma please give a 100% and convince Mourinho you deserve to be in the starting 11 for 90 minutes. Força Quaresma!
Video in Portuguese 'Felipão começa a impor seu estilo no Chelsea'
This Brazilian report films Scolari for 3 days with Chelsea in the pre-season in Macao.
They talk about Scolari and English, where he learned English, what language he speaks to Portuguese -speaking Chelsea players (Alex, Deco, Ferreira, Carvalho, Bosingwa).
It turns out he learned English when he coached in Saurdi Arabia. "I didn't have lessons yet. I do expect to speak better within 5 or 6 months"
------
I liked the 2nd minute when Deco and Alex spoke in Portuguese. They said that Scolari speaks in English to everyone. It then shows Frank Lampard, and Ballack.
I wish they do their pre-season tour in the USA next summer.

Video about Cristiano Ronaldo being important for Portugal in Euro 2008.
When I was watching this video, it talked about Cristiano Ronaldo being important for the Portugal team. There weren't many specifics until the first minute when Paolo Ferreira appeared!
There's a video clip of Paolo Ferreira's press conference- he's answering a question about Cristiano Ronaldo's form.
01:05 Paolo Ferreira: "He's focused. He's a winner. He also, all his life to win. He wants to make a good competition."
01:23 Are the team over-relying on Ronaldo? Paolo Ferreira: "Ronaldo is now, you know, in my opinion, the best player in the world. He's focused on the national team. He wants to make a good tournament."
The narrator builds up Cristiano Ronaldo Man U's #7 a lot. They put clips of Portugal teammates's statements on him in their press-conferences.
02:14 Nuno Gomes "I think he has the qualities to be the man of the tournament."
