In the 2008 pre-season Benfica started with high hopes as always. Rui Costa was prepared to sign great players, at least 3. It's the first season that Rui Costa serves as Benfica Sports director, and not as a professional footballer.
Rui Costa says in Portuguese:

How many players am I talking about? At least 3. Luis Garcia is a good player. But he's not crucial. He's not the only player. He's part of the list of Benfica but he's not the only one on our list. The Benfica squad will be modified. It was part of the plans. I had the opportunity to observe the team. During the next week, I think some players will leave the Benfica squad."
