His last name is not really Gomes! That 'gomes' name was after Fernando Gomes, who was the top European goalscorer in 1983 and 1985.
Long name: Nuno Miguel Soares Pereira Ribeiro
Born in Amarante, in north-west Portugal
2000-2002 played at ACF Fiorentina in the Italian Serie A
2002-2008 plays with Benfica in the Portuguese Superliga

So what do fans of the Portugal national team generally think of him?
Why is he always in the starting 11? Can't Scolari see that Nani is in better shape? Once Pauleta retired after the 2006 world cup, the goals were now up to Nuno Gomes as a lone striker up front.

Euro 2008:

He scored that goal in the euro 2008 quarterfinal that gave me hope again. Unfortunately it was too late and Germany won. I think that with Scolari gone he won't be guaranteed in the starting lineup anymore. Make way for Nani!

There was also a little tension before the Portugal-Germany quarterfinal- regarding Nuno Gomes as the lone striker. Portugal legend and Benfica legend and pretty much a symbol of Portugal, Eusebio, had made some unsupportive statements about Nuno Gomes- 1 day before the game!

He had said, well the truth, but the surprising thing was the timing. Eusebio said that Portugal is missing a "ponta de lanca" a striker, a true striker. You can imagine the portuguese reporters immediately asked Nuno Gomes about it in the press conference. Gomes diplomatically said Eusebio is the best, that they talked in the morning, that there's no problem.
