With all due respect to Hugo Almeida, he's not enough. He can't be the only striker called up in the Portugal team for Brazil - Portugal. What is new coach Queiroz trying to prove?
To be fair, Almeida played 90 minutes in two Portugal games and has not scored.
Queiroz saw Almeida play 90 minutes in friendly Faroe Islands 0-5 Portugal. Even Nani scored in the last 5 minutes and striker Almeida could not. Portugal 0-0 Albania Oct. 15, 2008- Queiroz preferred Almeida in the starting lineup over Nuno Gomes. In 90 minutes Almeida didn't convert any goal opportunities.
What else does Queiroz need to see in order for him to replace Almeida with Nuno Gomes? At least having 2 more strikers in the call up list would make more sense. Portugal lacks consistent strikers yet he dares to call only one.
It's just a friendly game but it's a friendly game that the world will watch because it's against Brazil not Faroe Islands. Sporting CP's Helder Postiga and Yannick Djalo could have been an alternative.
It's time for Portugal to back up Scolari's claim that "Portugal is one of the best teams in the world." I don't think so. Until they start winning European cups and the World cup with strikers that score most goals then I'll believe it.
The last qualifiers one defeat at home and two 0-0 draws- Obviously starting lineup striker Almeida is not doing his job, time for him to start on the bench.
Too bad he can't because he's the only striker on the Portugal call-up list. Certainly many Portugal fans can't believe he only called striker Almeida and left OUT Nuno Gomes.
