It's not well-known that Deco formed a non-profit organization for children in Indaiatuba, Brazil. I found out about it when he talked about it in his "Os Incriveis" video interview. It's inspiring to see how these well-paid football players give back to a community.
It's called "Istituto Deco 20."(Remember he got Ferreira's #20 at Chelsea) The website is available in Portuguese, Spanish and English.
It serves children between 5 to 13 years old in the communities of 'bairros Caminho da Luz e Oliveira Camargo' in São Paulo, Brazil. It provides them with cultural knowledge in the areas of education, sports, and culture.
Video of Deco visiting Indaiatuba during this summer's vacation.
The people in that area receive him like a hero ;-)
English translation:
"Everytime Deco comes back to Indaiatuba, there's a party wherever he goes.
Lady: 'If it wasn't for him, and the opportunities he gives to our kids, they wouldn't know about sports, leisure, education..."
While he was in Brazil for the Brazil 6-2 Portugal game, a day before he visited the new theater of the institute.
One of the kids in the classroom: 'We're delighted to see him in person, so close! He came all the way here to see us. Amazing!
The institute has space for everything. There's a gym, cafeterias and a theater that is almost completed.
01:10 Deco- 'The theater is for kids that hope to one day be an actor, or be in dance and music. They're things that anyone can wish for but they don't have the opportunities to make it a reality. Therefore they have other things to aspire too not just football.'
01:44 Kids say why they like being there.
01:50 They asked Deco if he'd ever come back to Brazil to play and in what team.
Deco- "Corinthians is the team I support. Ever since I was a kid so if I returned to Brazil I'd play at Corinthians."
However, he still has a 3-year contract with Chelsea FC. He wants to help Chelsea win the Champions League.
Deco "I already won the Champions League twice. Probably with my experience, I can help Chelsea win it. We have a good team."
