We read that Messi will wear the #10 Barcelona jersey. It used to be Ronaldinho's number. Dani Alves will wear #20. That was Deco's number.
I think today these numbers have more marketing value. About 20 years ago, these numbers were taken more seriously. For instance, the #7, the #10 one already knew what position they played and the player they were referring to.
Now there are numbers like "99" Ronaldo at Real Madrid, Antonio Cassano at Sampdoria. Not to mention the triple digits "100" of "El Boffo" Bautista, of Chivas de Guadalajara. "80" of Ronaldinho at AC Milan. I do respect them for customizing their numbers with child births, or own birth.
