"Same starting lineup of Portugal- Turkey" for Czech Republic game, says Scolari

Czech Republic 1 - 3 Portugal
.................................................................17' Sionko..... 7' Deco
.................................................................................. 64' Cristiano Ronaldo
......................................................................................90' +1 Ricardo Quaresma
  • IF Portugal wins, Switzerland doesn't beat Turkey- Portugal qualifies to the quarter-finals!!!
I can't wait for the Czech Republic-Portugal game to start today. Kickoff is at 8:50 in the morning, Los Angeles time, USA Pacific time. I'll be watching the images on ESPN and listening to the narration online on the radio. Paulo Sérgio and Nuno Matos put so much excitement to every play not to mention the goals. ESPN's narration is a little too calm for me. Same starting lineup as the game with Turkey,
1-Ricardo

4-Bosingwa--- 15- Pepe---- 1616-Carvalho--- 2- Ferreira

20 Deco---- 8-Petit------10- Moutinho

11-Simao -------7- Cristiano Ronaldo
21- Nuno Gomes

I just saw the 1st half. Portugal not dominating in the midfield, especially in the first 8 minutes. Czech Republic goal on a corner kick- Portugal defenders Ferreira and Pepe focused on captain Ujfalusi- forgot Sionko, and bam the goal. Big surprise- Milan Baros in the starting 11 instead of Jan Koller.

  • What stands out: 4 shots ON target by Cristiano Ronaldo- All saved by Peter Cech. Ronaldo is definitely having a better game than in the Turkey one. Not marked as much as in the 1st game.
  • Portugal had MORE shots on target than Czech Republic. ABout 5- 2 from Deco and 2 from Petit. Midfielders again. Where are the strikers?
  • Czech Republic was a much more equal-quality opponent than Turkey. Portugal had moments where they didn't have possesion of the ball
  • My favorite player Ferreira is not having a great game. Started well, toward the end, didn't understand Deco in a pass and didn't prevent a throw for the Czech. He was fouled by a Czech player, he started bleeding on his right eyebrow. Had to leave the field, change jerseys. During injury time, he kept bleeding.
  • Most likely he'll be replaced. Jorge Ribeiro might replace him. After all Ferreira is a right-back, Scolari insists in putting him on as a left-back.

Can't compare Portugal's performance to the Turkey one. Portugal didn't dominate in the midfield. It was up to Deco to go forward. Most of the time the Czech players stole the ball from Joa Moutinho. Petiti many times had to go al lthe way back to the defense area to get the ball. Near pepe, Carvalho. Looks very hard so far for Portugal to score more goals. Trouble in the midfield.

2nd half: Only 2 clear shots on target by Czech Republic. 1) on target, that goalkeeper Ricardo headed over the bar. 2) minute 61:52. Corner kick, 4 Portugal players around Ujfalusi, Sionko was able to beat Ferreira and another defender. Baros and Sionko were much quicker and made it to the penalty box to try to score. By themselves in front of the goal with only Ricardo in goal. No Portugal players were at the posts.

Portugal dominated, especially in counterattacks in the injury time. 60th minute Jan Koller warms up. Constant threat, Czech Republic's Sionko.

Czech republic put in Jan Koller. You'd expect allright, he'll give slim Carvalho and Ferreira some trouble. Carvalho even said yesterday at the press conference that Koller is physicaller stronger. Surprise- not 1 shot on target. Scolari responded to that change by putting in tall, strong, Stuttgart defender Fernando Meira.

Czech Republic- the player who almost scored and had the best goal opportunities was Sionko. The one who scored the 1st goal in the 1st half. He kept on insisting even until injury time. Of course by that time Portugal was unstoppable. Especially with Quaresma having to prove he deserves to start instead of Simao Sabrosa.

The other times Czech Republic was also dangerous in its corner kicks. Portugal needs to improve the marking of men on corner kicks. On the 2nd corner for the Czechs, the Portugal defenders forgot about Sionko, focused on Jan Koller and risked conceding a goal.

Portugal came back with the same starting 11. Even the commentators on the online radio thought Ferreira needed to be replaced for Jorge Ribeiro. It didn't happen. Scolari made changes until after the 60th minute. The answer to Koller was Meira, then Quaresma for Simao.

Ricardo Carvalho- today had a faultless game along with Bosingwa. The 2 Portuguese commentators on the rtp radio called him "imperial" several times. Constant threat, Czech Republic's Sionko. In the minute 60:51, Sionko on the right approaching the penalty box and Carvalho cleared the ball. Couldn't avoid the corner kick though.

Portugal defense caught sleeping toward the end of the game- Baros could have scored when the game was 2-0 on minute 77:04. Plasil long ball to Milan Baros, ready to head it to goal. Only Bosingwa was behind Baros but Baros was quicker. Pepe got there later.

Baros beating Quaresma, long ball to Koller in the area. Meira right next to Koller couldn't clear it out of the area. The ball bounced toward Sionko and Bosingwa barely made it in time to block Sionko's kick over the bar.

FC Porto's Ricardo Quaresma: 79:12. Simao out, Quaresma in.

I've been waiting to see Quaresma play in this big stage. I thought he wouldn't get a chance in the game. Simao had a great game against Turkey. It just went to confirm Scolari's conviction that he's an untouchable. With the game sealed 2-0, Scolari I assume let Simao rest and test Quaresma.

A lot to ask. 10 minutes to make a difference! He came on got fouled twice. In minute 87:43 Quaresma from the middle going to the right flank, looked like was going to do his trademark "tribela" goal, but hesitated and Jankulovski was there to make his shot off-target. Finally, Cristiano Ronaldo gave him that pass in the 90'+1 minute and scored, with Peter Cech already beaten.

(uefa euro 2008 official) Carlsberg Man of the match: Cristiano Ronaldo

For me, Deco! What else could you ask for? He was more consistent in the WHOLE match. Scored the 1st one, assist for the 2nd goal, at least 4 shots on target. Cristiano Ronaldo was decisive in the 2nd half. Especially with the assist to Quaresma in injury time.

Czech Republic Lineup 1- Petr Cech, 2 - Zdenek Grygera, 21 -Tomas Ujfalusi, 22 - David Rozehnal, 6 - Marek Jankulovski, 3 - Jan Polak, 17 - Marek Matejovsky, 4 - Tomas Galasek, 7 - Libor Sionko, 20-Jaroslav Plasil, 15 - Milan Baros

PORTUGAL Lineup 1-Ricardo, 4-José Bosingwa, 15-Pepe, 16-Ricardo Carvalho, 2-Paulo Ferreira, 8-Petit, 20-Deco, 10-João Moutinho, 11-Simão Sabrosa, 7-Cristiano Ronaldo, 21-Nuno Gomes

Improve for the next game, against Switzerland:

Corner kicks- Simao's in charge of them. Portugal defenders need to man-mark more of the opponents. Czech Republic's 1st goal was a result of a corner kick- the defenders Ferreira, Pepe focused on Baros and left Sionko to midfielder Petit.

Finishing-

Service to Forwards- This time Nuno Gomes did have a great game like the one agaisnt Turkey. In the 1st game, he had 2 clear goal opportunities. Hugo Almeida the other forward came in and didn't have a clear shot on target. Most of the goals seems to come from Deco, Petit, Simao, CR7.
