I was reading Record and sapo.pt- there are a few articles on the next Portugal manager. I thought- wow. Scolari's still there, the Euro 2008 is only halfway done. Already speculating on the next one! Their point of view was not just who will be the next one. Their question is--- will he be a Portuguese or a foreigner.
I thought it was an interesting question.
Now that Scolari leaves after Euro 2008. Who do you think it will be? Here are 2 sides:
June 25th- Portuguese FA (FPF) will meet to discuss 2 candidates: See the video http://ww1.rtp.pt/desporto/index.php?t=Reuniao-na-FPF-para-decidir-novo-seleccionador.rtp&article=153531&headline=37&visual=17&Top=21
Carlos Queirós - Manchester United assistant
Zico.
Portuguese:
June 16th,
- Rui Costa (former Portugal player) said in a TV interview on June 16th that he would prefer a Portuguese. "If we want a Portuguese..." See the videoclip: Rui Costa fala em técnico português para Selecção Nacional
- Jorge Costa (manager of Olhanense, former FC Porto player, former Boavista club manager) said that Manuel Jose, return to his country or the national team for instance. Manuel Cajuda. They've had good results. When asked if he prefers Portuguese he said that 'Yes, evidently, but like I said, the priority needs to be the quality of the manager...' See the video clip: Jorge Costa prefere que seleccionador nacional seja português
- Vice President of FPF (Portuguese FA) Amândio de Carvalho, (same last name as Chelsea defender :)) said yesterday that "the next manager will speak Portuguese" "The players are used to dialogue, like what happened in the last 5 years under Scolari. That's why it will be important that the new manager speak Portuguese."
The press understood that as the candidate will be either Portuguese or Brasilian. Some reader comments on Record.pt (Portuguese sports paper) were funny and sarcastic saying: "will speak" meaning will learn, "any foreigner can learn portuguese from now until the end of the Euro 2008."
Foreigner:
Either:
Cristiano Ronaldo said in yesterday's press conference that he wanted "a bom treinador," (a good manager) diplomatically not choosing sides.
