Context Portugal team in Nov 2007:

Portugal had come from a victory against Azerbaijan 2-0 the previous Saturday. "The Azerbaijan game wasn't a great game in terms of skills but the attitude was fantastic. We showed a lot of personality," Scolari said. "It'll have to be that way with Kazakhstan, too."

Portugal was second in Group A with 20 points from 11 games, trailing Poland by four points, though the Portuguese have a game in hand. Finland has 20 points from 12 games.

Portugal's campaign started going off course with a defeat in Poland last year, followed by draws in Finland and Belgium.

Two consecutive home draws last month, against Poland and Serbia, set alarm bells ringing. Scolari was in the stands again for the Kazakhstan game. His assistant Flavio "Murtosa" Teixeira was on the bench.

Nuno Gomes had returned to Lisbon with a thigh injury. Hugo Almeida would make his second straight start as forward. Uncapped Maritimo striker Ariza Makukula flew in from Portugal to join the squad.
