Paulo Ferreira made news today by telling The Mirror that Ancelotti has confidence in him.
Ferreira, 30, held showdown talks with Ancelotti, who told him he is still in Chelsea's plans. The full-back said: "I want to forget last season because I am focusing on being fit for the start of this season and I will be at my maximum level by September.
"It was important that the manager rated me and has confidence in me. I will be part of his plans and there are opportunities to get in the team. No-one can doubt my commitment, I will always give 100 per cent but if you're not 100 per cent then you can't help the team and that was my problem last season."

Paulo is the very definition of a fringe player. It goes to show how strong the overall squad is when you consider that fact. If we sell him, his contribution to our play won't at all be missed. Then again, it's not my money, so who am I to complain about keeping a good player around?

Monica08: Bosingwa had a great game against AC milan this pre-season. I'm looking forward to seeing Belletti play. Mourinho, Scolari -- will Ancelotti follow the trend and keep Ferreira on the bench as the 3rd or 4th right-back choice? I hope not.
Ferreira says he's focusing in the coming season and wants to forget about last season. Ok, Ancelotti told him he has confidence in him. Part of his plans-- how big is his part? 2nd or 3rd choice? League games? League and Champions League games? A stay at Chelsea is so risky. The good news is that he predicts he'll be back by September. The 2 September qualifiers would be too soon. He's got to be called up for the 2 Portugal qualification matches in October 2009.
Next Portugal game is on August 12, 2009. One more month for Ferreira to be available for the call-up list. Who will Queiroz call for right-back and left back? Besides Bosingwa of course.

The right-back doesn't think he'll leave Chelsea and is hoping to see what will Ancelotti's arrival brings.
Paulo Ferreira arrived at Chelsea in 2004 after 2 successful years at FC Porto. The defender accompanied Mourinho and Ricardo Carvalho. The first season in London went well until he got injured with the national team. He wasn't used as much as he would have wanted in the following seasons. Nonetheless he extended his contract with the "blues."
The Portuguese international doesn't deny the possibility of returning to Portugal, but like he said in an interview to Maisfutebol/TVI, he doesn't think a lot about that. For now, he's thinking of his future that's still at Stamford Bridge.
You have a contract until 2013, will you fulfill it?
Paulo Ferreira: "I hope to continue and fulfill my contract with Chelsea. I feel good, I was well-received and the family is happy here. Later, I don't see any reasons for change either. But, one never knows what will happen. If I have to leave sooner to another championship, we'll see in due time. Nonetheless, what I hope is to continue being here until the end of my contract."
At that time you'll be 34 years old, yo udon't think you'll end your career in Portugal?
Paulo Ferreira: "I don't know, we'll see later (Não sei, logo se verá). I'll have to see how I am physically (Terei de ver como estarei em termos físicos). We'll see how I feel. If I'm in condition to finish in another country or in Portugal then I think I can. In this moment, I only think of Chelsea (De momento só penso no Chelsea)."
Ancelotti is at Chelsea, an offensive team with a defensive coach. What will come out of this?
Paulo Ferreira: "I have no idea (Não faço ideia). He's a coach with lots of experience but he's going to be in a different championship (É um treinador com muita experiência, mas vai estar num campeonato completamente diferente). I don't know... First we'll have to get to know him and then get what his idea are.
But what was the feeling in the dressing room with this news [Ancelotti]?
Paulo Ferreira: "We didn't get to talk about it becase we didn't know for sure, who the coach would be (Não chegámos a falar sobre isso porque não sabíamos, ao certo, quem seria o treinador). At that time, there were still many hypotheses."
Chelsea is becoming a Portuguese team... Deco, Bosingwa and Quaresma have they adapted?
Paulo Ferreira: "For those who just arrived it was easier because there were others already here (Para quem chegou agora foi mais fácil, até porque já estavam lá outros). Me, Ricardo Carvalho and Hilário. When we arrived it was a little harder because we didn't know anyone (Quando nós chegámos foi um pouco mais difícil, porque não conhecíamos ninguém). They found familiar people. We tried to make them feel comfortable. Not just the Portuguese players, when I arrived I got support from the players already there. No denying that Jose Bosingwa was superb in the beginning of the season as a right-back. Paulo Ferreira missed important Champions League games and didn't play much this season~ AGAIN. He talked about his time at Chelsea when Scolari was coach.

The Chelsea defender says that Hiddink "brought a new spirit to the team."
With the arrival of Scolari, Paulo Ferreira thought that he'd have more opportunities to play. The arrival of Bosingwa complicated Ferreira's possibility of being in the starting 11. Nonetheless since Ferreira knew Scolari from the national team he remained optimistic.
The Brazilian left in February and Hiddink arrived. The defender played more but in march he injured his left-knee. The season ended early for the international player that talks about the season in an interview to ao Maisfutebol/TVI.
So how do you sumamrize this season?
Paulo Ferreira: "Regarding Chelsea, it wasn't a good year for me seeing that I didn't play a lot and then got injured. As for the Poprtugal national team, I had more playing opportunities there. I think that in the end, I was happier in the national team than in the club (Penso que, no fundo, fui mais feliz na selecção do que no clube)."
The injury ended up conditioning your whole season...
Paulo Ferreira: "Yes, I was in a transition; new coach and more playing opportunities. Logically, the injury conditioned my season."
When you say that you were happier in the national team than in Chelsea, that can have to do with the change of coaches too?
Paulo Ferreira: "Scolari came, a coach that we all know and knew me well. Nonetheless I didn't have the opportunities that I wanted. I never discussed the coach's decision and think I never well. I respected the decision to the maximum. Of course, I was a little sad because I wanted to play more and that didn't happen (Claro que fiquei um pouco triste porque queria jogar mais e isso não aconteceu)."
Did you expect Scolari to remain for such a short while?
Paulo Ferreira: "No, I didn't expect it. I was even surprised (Até fiquei surpreendido). We weren't doing that bad (Nem estávamos assim tão mal). The club decided to put a period to the contract. Really, it took us by surprise. They are decisions that the club directors do and that one has to respect."
One can tell that with Hiddink's arrival, the team got a new spirit. Chelsea almost made it to the final of the Champions League and became contenders to the title. Did the players feel/ notice it too?
Paulo Ferreira: «It was the second phase of the championship going into a decisive phase. We needed to be near the top to fight fr the title. HIddink brought a new team spirit. Players that weren't playing wanted to prove themselves to him. Sometimes, change can be beneficial as it was in this case. From then on, the team started to play well. HIddink ended up doing a good job."
At the end of 2007, Chelsea had conditions to be champions even without Mourinho. The truth is that 2 seasons have passed and that objective has not been achieved. Was Mourinho a key to success?
Paulo Ferreira: "We did feel his exit but we also felt a stronger ManUnited in these last 3 years. They managed their squad well and bought good players. We couldn't... We were going along... We got to crucial moments where normally we wouldn't fail, but we did. We have to congratulate ManUnited because it's the right champion in these last 3 years. Next season, we hope to be back stronger to try to conquer the title."
So what are the objectives for next season?
Paulo Ferreira: "The same as always: try to win the majority of the titles and play regularly."

What a day! I just came by to post the interview of Paulo Ferreira for his fans around the world. Part of it was quoted on Setanta. I went on Maisfutebol and came across 3 pages of his interview in Portuguese and video! Wow! Couldn't keep it to myself!
What's more it was an extended interview because he was asked about FC Porto, Scolari's era with the Portugal team, staying at Chelsea, the current Portugal team. What a wealth of information and surely a rare point of view since there are so few interviews of him every month.

Paulo Ferreira tends to be in the call-up list of the national team coaches. However, an injury on the left knee from March has ruled him out. The right-back won't be able to play in the Portugal team against Albania, but he emphasizes that he's a "supporter" and will cheer for a Portuguese victory.
In an interview to Maisfutebol/TVI, the defender was confident of a qualification despite it being a difficult game against Albania. Paulo Ferreira doesn't believe in the possibility of Portugal not qualifying for the world cup.
The Portugal team plays at the stadium Qemal Stafa on June 6, 2009. Remember that under Carlos Queiroz, the Portugal team drew against Albania (0-0) in October 2008.
How are you going to support from the outside?
Paulo Ferreira: "It's always complicated to see the game from the outside. I'm supporting the team to get a good result and I hope it happens. I want to wish them all the luck in the world. I will be supporting them from this side."
Paulo Ferreira: "All the games are complicated. I think this one will be too. There was a change of coach and there will be players who will want to prove themselves to him. If Portugal misses this game against Albania, what will happen?
Paulo Ferreira: "I don't know, I don't even want to think about that. I want to think that we'll win against Albania and then think of the next game. If that happens we have to keep working, thinking of one game at a time, and to finish in the best possible way. I think that's what we'll try to do."
Do you think Portugal will be in the 2010 world cup?
Paulo Ferreira: "I think so (Acredito que sim). We have a good group and quality players. I'm cheering for us to be in the world cup (Fico a torcer para que possamos estar no Mundial).
And what about Paulo Ferreira? [in the world cup]
Paulo Ferreira: "The most important thing is for Portugal to win. Me being in the world cup is up to the coach. The most important thing is for the Portugal team to be there."
Despite being a right-back, you've played more than once as a left-back. If necessary, are you willing to play as a left-back again?
Paulo Ferreira: "Yes, no doubt about it (Sim, sem dúvida). I play in the position where the coach thinks I can help the team the most. If it's as a left-back well then I'll do it, even though it's not my position."
How did you see the praises that Carlos Queiroz gave you, about your availability [able to play in different positions]?
Paulo Ferreira: "I'm satisfied. It's a matter of pride to play in the national team no matter what position I'll have to play in. It's important to give one's all. Just being part of the team makes me proud (Só o facto de estar na selecção já é um motivo de orgulho). I think all players think this."

Can still see Ferreira's right eye not fully recovered from the bleeding the day before. The last 3 posts with Ferreira pictures. Probably can tell that I can't wait to see him play again Chelsea or wherever.
Paulo Ferreira won't be back from surgery and recovery until 3 or 4 months. When is the next time he'll be called up for a Portugal team game? I think after the 2 October games. I miss even looking at the Chelsea bench to catch a glimpse of him.

With Bosingwa injured, we'll see how the alternative right-backs will do in the next Portugal games. There's Nelson in the current call-up list. He's likely to play in tomorrow's Portugal v. South Africa. Joao Perreira can also impress Carlos Queiroz in Portugal v. Romania on April 1, 2009.

Can't believe Portugal lost. I don't even feel like watching the friendly Portugal - South Africa. They could win but I wanted to see them win today, with all the pressure and give home fans goals.
Was watching this video about Maradona visiting Chelsea in January 2008. The anchorman says Ferreira, Carvalho and Hilario met Maradona in this visit. Ended up hearing interviews of Joe cole and Sheva. In the end there are 4 seconds of Ferreira drinking from a water bottle with a training vest.
