Carlos Queiroz presented as Portugal manager in Lisbon

The Portugal manager Carlos Queiroz was presented in today's press conference.

Portuguese FA president, Gilberto Madail, said with a big smile in his introduction, "the prodigal son, returning home to mama." (Queiroz had been Portugal manager of the Portugal under-21 team that won the world cup).

Queiroz will be presented as the Portugal manager, Tomorrow, Wednesday July 16th,

Tomorrow there will be the press conference where Carlos Queiroz will be presented as the new Portugal manager. His contract is until 2012 and the main objective is to qualify Portugal for the 2010 World Cup.

Queiroz arrived in Lisbon, Portugal yesterday, July 14th. Some Portuguese press went to receive him and ask him questions. Queiroz stood firm and said that he won't say anything until tomorrow.

He also thanked the reporters present for having come at a late hour to receive him and to understand that he will do what was agreed to, speak at the press conference.

I think he'll say something new. He's going to say he's proud of taking the job. He plans to qualify Portugal for the 2010 world cup. He might also downplay expectations.

I have no doubt that Queiroz will achieve that objective of qualifying for the World Cup.

For me, the question is, will he get Portugal to the FINAL of the 2010 world cup. Qualifying won't be that hard. I don't think the teams in the same group will be that tough.

Carlos Queiroz new manager of Portugal until 2012. How will he face these 4 changes in the Portugal starting lineup?

When I checked the news today, and saw Record's cover "Queiroz ate 2012," July 10th edition, I breathed a sigh of relief."Federation and Man U understood each other today- Queiroz until 2012 - The English guaranteed 'indemnizacao' for the exit of the new manager of the national team"

I wish Carlos Queiroz all the luck in the world. The candidate that most Portuguese fans wanted. After 9 days of speculation of whether or not Queiroz will leave Man U, it's done.

I really think he can do a better job than Scolari. Scolari had his favorites in the starting lineup and nobody could understand his choices sometimes. For example, Ricardo in goal, Simao instead of Quaresma, Nuno Gomes after the bad season at Benfica, Ferreira as left-back playing out of position....

The results were good with Scolari. However, they could have been much better with the players and the experience he had.

For instance, in the last Euro 2008 qualifying games he didn't always put the best starting lineup. There were draws against teams in Group A that weren't even in the FIFA top 10! Or, not being able to beat Greece in Euro 2004- Faced them twice. This February, Portugal didn't even dominate in the friendly Greece-Portugal. I wonder if the 4th time Portugal face Greece will finally be a convincing victory.

How will Carlos Queiroz handle these 4 starting lineup issues differently than Scolari?

We'll see in Portugal's 1st friendly match after the Euro 2008, on August 20th.

----1) the captain of the Portugal national team

Scolari had chosen 5 because there is no Figo or Rui Costa. In the Euro 2008 we saw the order. At least the first two, Nuno Gomes and then Cristiano Ronaldo. I heard many fans acknowledge that Cristiano Ronaldo is no captain material. He was 1st captain in the friendly Brazil-Portugal. He was 2nd captain in the Euro 2008. If Nuno Gomes loses his starting position then it might be Ricardo Carvalho as one of the first 2 captains.

----2) 1st choice goalkeeper

It was obvious Ricardo is not fit to be the starting goalkeeper after everyone saw the Euro 2008 quarterfinal Portugal-Germany. I'm positive Queiroz will do what Scolari didn't have the courage to do in the last 12 months: Put Benfica's Quim in goal!

----3) Winger Simao or Quaresma

Simao is Simao. Experience, energy, everything you need in a player when it's an important match. When Simao is not in top form and Quaresma is, will Queiroz put Quaresma in the starting 11 and leave Simao on the bench? Scolari in the last 12 months didn't dare to. I'm sure Queiroz will.

----4) Forward Nuno Gomes on the bench, try new forward in the starting lineup.

Scolari was so inflexible. Always Nuno Gomes in the starting 11. Helder Postiga when he played in the Euro 2008 games showed he can have goal opprtunities and in the most important game of his career, Euro 2008 quarterfinal Portugal -Germany, he scored and didn't succumb to the pressure.

Nani. He sets up goals and scored himself. I think Queiroz will give him more playing time.

These are 4 changes I look forward to seeing with Queiroz as new Portugal manager. Of course there are other issues he'll face like choosing a left-back like Caneira or keep insisting with Paolo Ferreira like Scolari did... I think these are the 4 most important issues he'll tackle.

Video- Man U fans don't want to see Queiroz leave

Queiroz is already in Lisbon, Portugal. Portuguese media Record and RTP are speculating he will be the next Portugal manager. Not so fast! He's loved by the fans at Man United.

Here's what they said:
Fan 1: To be honest, in the long term, I think he'll be a bigger loss than Cristiano. A player could always be replaced. Even the world's best, as Cristiano is. But Queiroz it'd be a big loss for Manchester United. Certainly.

Fan 2: I think it's a bad thing for the club. We want stability. if he goes it's not stability.

Fan 3: There's a link between Cristiano Ronaldo and the assistant manager, isn't there? So, if one goes, maybe the other goes, who knows?

Fan 4: He's done a fantastic job over the last 3 years. We've won the league twice the champions league as well. Also. Please Carlos don't leave. We really want the Poruguese contingent to stay at Old Trafford.

Fan 5: I rather him stay at United. You don't sell the best player in the world do you?

Fan 6: [Cristiano Ronaldo] People say about loyalty. We took him from Sporting Lisbon, so he wan't very loyal to them. So we deserve on more than he gave to Sporting Lisbon. That's football. He's free to move if he wishes. Good luck to him.

No news on the next portugal manager. Today I was watching 'Queiroz já chegou a Portugal.'

Queiroz is in Lisbon! He'll be in Portugal for the next few days.

RTP, portuguese press said they called him. Queiroz didn't take the call saying there was nothing to comment.

For sure, we'll know who it is in Portugal's 1st friendly match after the Euro 2008. August 20. Opponent still to be announced.

'With Queiroz in the Euro 2008, Portugal could have gone farther" said Gil, former Sub-20 player

This morning I was watching this video A defesa de Queiroz na Selecção. I already want to know who the next Portugal manager is. I can't stand the wait.

Either Zico or Queiroz will be the next manager.

They interviewed Gil, a former player of Portugal sub-20. So who the heck is he?

17 years ago, Gil was in the Portugal sub-20 team that won the world cup. The manager at the time: Carlos Queiroz. Now Gil is a coach the Man United youth teaching kids 6 to 8 years old.

He had very interesting things to say in favor of Queiroz for Portugal manager.

-- "Queiroz knows Portuguese soccer. Nice past with the Portugal national team. I think Portugal has a lot to gain with him."

-- "No disrespect to the Portugal manager in the Euro 2008 but I think with Queiroz in the team with this Euro, with th 4-3-3- Nani, Quaremsa, Cristiano Ronaldo, up front. The triangle."

Next Portugal manager, a foreigner or a Portuguese?

I was reading Record and sapo.pt- there are a few articles on the next Portugal manager. I thought- wow. Scolari's still there, the Euro 2008 is only halfway done. Already speculating on the next one! Their point of view was not just who will be the next one. Their question is--- will he be a Portuguese or a foreigner.

I thought it was an interesting question.
Now that Scolari leaves after Euro 2008. Who do you think it will be? Here are 2 sides:

  The press understood that as the candidate will be either Portuguese or Brasilian. Some reader comments on Record.pt (Portuguese sports paper) were funny and sarcastic saying: "will speak" meaning will learn, "any foreigner can learn portuguese from now until the end of the Euro 2008."
